Are you finding a million excuses not to join a gym? Well, maybe those excuses are valid. Maybe you’d be better off working out at home. Consider all the advantages at-home work-outs have over going to a gym.
No commute time. In the time it takes to brush the snow off the car, drive to the gym, get out of your winter clothes, suit up for exercise, actually exercise, suit up for trudging through a snowy parking lot, brush the snow off the car, and drive home; you could easily finish a 20 minute workout at home. Not to mention, you don’t have to fight traffic, pay for parking, or spend money on gas.
No gym-timidation. Most of us are already insecure enough; we don’t need to go a gym and feel like we’re not thin enough, not muscular enough, not dressed stylishly, lacking endurance, and maybe even little a gassy. At home there’s no one around to give us the once-over, or worse yet, the stink-eye. Solitude can be a good thing when it comes to exercise.
Do whatever you want, whenever you want. Gyms offer specific classes at specific times, but what if you can’t make it to the classes you want? (And doesn’t it seem like that’s always the way it goes?) That’s enough to make you not exercise. With at-home workouts, if you want to do a cardio DVD at 3 pm, you can. If you feel like Zumba at 11:15 am, that’s perfect. Pop in the DVD and get started!
Cost effective. (That’s another way to say cheaper.) You can get all kinds of fitness DVDs in bargain bins, or buy used DVDs online. There are also free exercise videos online and on some TV stations. Most thrift stores don’t accept exercise equipment, so it’s pretty easy to pick up unwanted exercise equipment at an extremely low price, or free. (Check Freecycle, Craigslist, and local newspaper ads.)
Less stress. When all you have to do is walk down to the basement to work out, you eliminate a lot of the stresses and stressors that come with going to the gym. You don’t have to schedule a babysitter. You don’t have to avoid certain kids or staff in the child care room at the gym. You don’t have to tolerate an instructor or member that you don’t care for. You get to focus on your workout, with no distractions.
There are many advantages to at-home workouts. It’s faster, cheaper and more peaceful than a gym membership.
