I have very sensitive skin, and it seems like every time I change skin care products my face revolts. As a result I have started using as many natural products as I can, but they can be double the price of conventional skin care. I have started exploring DIY options for skin care to be gentle to my skin AND my budget. Here are five facial peels I have tried.
Lavender Scrub. When my skin starts looking dull and my pores are clogged, I know its time for some serious exfoliation. One of my favorite recipes is also very easy!
2 T coconut oil
1 T baking soda
2 drops lavender essential oil
Mix coconut oil and baking soda in your palms until the oil has melted and the mixture turns into a paste. Add lavender essential oil and apply to the face in circular motions. Continue the circular motions for a minute, focusing on areas that especially need exfoliation like around the nose. Let sit on the face for five minutes, then remove with warm water and a wash rag. Be gentle when wiping off with the rag.
Gelatin Peel. This mask mimics the effect of a pore strip by “sticking” to the skin, and taking away impurities when peeled off.
1 T gelatin powder
1 1/2 T milk
Mix together and microwave for 15 seconds until just warm. Apply liberally to the face, avoiding sensitive areas like around the lips and eyes. Let it dry, and then peel off.
With this one I can never tell how much is stuff actually being removed from my face, and what is just texture from the gelatin, but your face will definitely feel tighter afterwards!
Blackhead Peel. If blackheads are an issue, this peel is the one you want to try.
1 egg white
1 t lemon juice
Whisk the ingredients together very well. If you think it is mixed, whisk a little more. Apply to the face and let dry. Once it is dry peel off. If it won’t peel off, use a washcloth and warm water.
Aspirin Peel. This is an oldie but a goodie. Aspirin is made up of salicylic acid – the same stuff that is in a litany of acne products.
5 crushed aspirin
1 t water
Mix crushed aspirin and water into a paste and apply to the face in circular motions, avoiding sensitive areas. Leave in til it dries and remove with warm water and a wash rag.
Yogurt Peel. This mask contains AHA – another ingredient we spend big bucks on in products.
3 T plain yogurt
1 T granulated sugar
Mix into a paste and apply to face in a circular motion. After five minutes remove with warm water and a wash rag.
