As a stylist, I am constantly making sure my clients are outfitted with attire suitable to their needs and what I feel would look great on them and most importantly make them feel comfortable. To maximize their number of outfits without making them spend tons of money, I always suggest to them these five staple pieces that they should never go without.
Navy suit / Blazer
First, is a navy suit. It can be worn as formally or as casually as you want it. It will allow for you to wear it to a wedding or on a night out on the town. I always suggest a navy suit over a black suit because a black suit should only be worn to black tie affairs or in a professional setting. If you don’t want to go for the whole suit, a navy blazer is a nice alternative. Remember, fit is key. If the suit is fitted nicely and tailored to the nines, your confidence will be through the roof.
Solid colored jeans
No, not in some insane color but in a dark denim or blue color. Or even an oxblood. When styling a client, I always tell them the darker the better. A dark jeans looks more sophisticated and always looks dapper paired with a button up and a knit tie. And, a plus is dark jeans will never go out of style. They are here to stay!
The plain white tee
Remember when Kanye West released his line with APC and his infamous $120 white t-shirt? Well, he was on to something. Investing in a white t-shirt made of cotton (Egyptian preferred) you can easily own it for four years or more with light use. I know that a hundred bucks seems really expensive for a plain white shirt that you can find in your local store in a pack for a fraction of the cost, but this investment is perfect for a causal day and will be in your closet for years.
Once known as a shoe for businessmen, oxfords have transitioned into an everyday shoe for the regal everyday consumer. Emerging back into the fashion scene three years ago, oxfords are being worn on all the popular men’s style blogs. Brown loafers are especially popular because they allow for every day wear. Whenever I am looking to spruce up my casual look, I always throw on a pair of nice socks and my brown oxfords.
Some may prefer khakis, buy I swear by chinos. Khakis are just too bland and have two purposes: school uniforms and business attire. Chinos on the other hand can be worn to just about anywhere. With chinos now coming in all kinds of fits, colors, textures and prints, you are sure to find one to your liking that you can make your own and wear to all of your events or just on an evening stroll.
These staple pieces will never go out of style and investing in these pieces will definitely be worth it. Remember, always wear things you are comfortable in and you will always look and feel confident.
