Whether you hit the weights regularly or enjoy doing a cardio circuit, make sure you’re fueling your body properly with the right food combinations. Eating a well-balanced meal about an hour before your workout can help you push through that challenging routine and also give you a boost of energy that lasts for hours. Skip the sugary snacks and caffeine in favor of some nutritious and wholesome foods that will sustain you through the workout.
Here are five energy-boosting foods you can eat before your next workout:
#1: Whole Food Energy Bar
A combination of dried fruit, oats, and protein can make for a great pre-workout snack. I’m a big fan of KIND bars because they are made with all-natural ingredients and outside of making your own bars, they are as pure as you can get. If you’re looking to burn fat, stick with low-sugar varieties.
#2: Banana with Almond Butter
When hunger pangs strike before a workout but you don’t want to eat a full meal, go with a banana combined with a tablespoon of almond butter. Almond butter is great source of healthy fats and combining it with a banana will give you a boost of energy for your workout. It’s a filling combination if power foods that will take care of hunger pangs for the next few hours.
#3: Fruit and Oatmeal Cup
Just a 1/2 cup of cooked oatmeal and some fresh fruit will provide your body with plenty of healthy carbs for that next workout. If you plan on hitting the weights, add 1/4 scoop of vanilla protein powder to the mix. This is another filling snack that provides plenty of energy.
#4: Green Apple with Almonds
This is one of my favorite pre-workout snacks because it’s easy to pack and keeps me full. It’s a high-fiber snack but also easy to digest within an hour. The combination of healthy carbs and healthy fats will give you the steady energy you need to push through that challenging sweat session.
#5: Eggs and Veggies
When I’m working out in the morning, I prefer to start my day with eggs. An egg omelet or scrambled eggs with a mix of fresh veggies is a protein-rich snack that will also contains some carbs and healthy fats for sustained energy. If you plan on working out for more than an hour or are doing a very intense workout, add a small apple for an energy boost.
