Tropical summers have become worse with the turn of the century. Since global warming became the buzz word, summer has become clever enough to be trendy and has become warmer and warmer. In such scorching, sunny days, it is so very difficult to go out and work. Summers hit the body badly. It drains out the body of water, essential fluids and some minerals.
We need to keep functioning and therefore our body too needs to be functioning optimally. To keep the body hydrated and replenish the loss of electrolytes, we need to take special care of our bodies. Drinking lots and lots of water is the best remedy, but there are also some other, really yummy beverages made out some cool fruits to calm the body and the mind. These beverages are refreshing, soothing and are totally trendy to chill out in a summer lounge party.
1. Tender Coconut Water
I am going to start with tender coconut water, which is easily available in any local market, and it has tremendously refreshing effects during summers. It is a natural energy drink better than any sports drink available in the market. It supplies the body with Potassium, glucose, Vitamin C and Vitamin B.
Tender coconut water is naturally tasty but to make it tastier, you can add a pinch of chat masala or black salt to it.
Lemonade is a wonderfully refreshing drink that can be prepared in a minute. Lemons have natural healing powers and strong anti-bacterial, anti-viral and immune boosting properties.
To make lemonade, take a lemon and cut into half. Take a glass and put 2 teaspoons of sugar in it. Fill the glass with chilled water. Now, take a half of the lemon and squeeze its entire juice into the glass. Add a pinch of black salt and stir. Lemonade is ready.
3. Sugarcane Juice
Sugarcane juice is a fabulous re-hydrating agent and it is very good for the well being of liver. It cools the body and also energizes it. It is difficult to prepare at home but is easily available at the local market in lieu of just Rs.10 or less in India.
Sugarcane juice can be drunk simply at its pure form; but a twist is always welcome to make it yummier. Ask the vendor to add a little ginger, lemon juice and a pinch of black salt. Now sip the wonder. A few crushed mint leaves may serve as the icing.
4. Cucumber and Mint Crush
This is one of my favorites. Since I don’t like cucumbers, this recipe gives me reasons to consume them. Cucumbers are often referred to as a superfood because it is known to be one of the best foods for body’s overall health. It seems c ucumbers contain most of the vitamins that our body needs in a single day and are also very good for hair and skin.
Cucumber and mint crush is an easy to make recipe. You need to take a medium sized cucumber and chop it. Then take 2-3 sprigs of mint leaves and take out the leaves from the stems. Now put the cucumber pieces and mint leaves in a blender. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar, a pinch of black salt, a teaspoon of lemon juice and a little water. Blend it. Pour it in a glass and sprinkle some Chat masala over it.
5. Muskmelon Milkshake
Muskmelon is a perfect summer fruit. It’s high water content helps to make up for body’s fluid loss through perspiration. Regular consumption of muskmelon gives healthy and younger looking skin.
To prepare this, you need to peel a muskmelon and cut it into medium sized pieces. Now, put the pieces into a blender; add 3 teaspoons of sugar (you can replace it with honey), a cup of chilled milk and blend it. Yummy muskmelon milkshake is ready. I love this drink as it has a wonderful flavor and it actually fills your stomach without making you high on calories.
Have fun in the sun. With proper hydration summer seems to be cooler than ever. Stay cool, stay healthy.
