High waves and high tech don’t have to be mutually exclusive, and as surfing has evolved, so have the Internet podcasts dedicated to the sport and those who live it. Here are five of the best surf-related podcasts out there right now. Most, if not all, of them can be found on iTunes.
Transworld Surf- This podcast is dedicated to “all things surfing.” It’s also a San Diego-based radio show airing live every Sunday morning at 7 on XTRA Sports 1360 AM. But for those of us who don’t live in that corner of the world, the podcasts are available for download on iTunes. Just use the keyword ‘Scott Bass.’ Nothing is off limits on this entertaining podcast, which covers everything from global surfing news to zanier segments like ‘Surf Dog Millionaire Trivia,’ ‘Kook and Duke’ and the sometimes surreal ‘Fact or Fiction.’ Definitely worth a listen.
Surf Simply- This Costa Rica-based podcast is produced by the eponymous lodge and school located at Playa Guiones in Nosara, the perfect place for beginners to get their sea legs. Their informative podcasts cover what they call the “key building blocks of surfing.” This one’s not just for beginners, though; some of their podcasts are targeting level 3 or 4 surfers. No “feel the rhythm of the ocean type waffle” here– the Surf Simply philosophy is concise and unambiguous. If you’re looking to learn specific skills and drills as you develop from barney to bitchin’, make sure to check out Surf Simply’s podcasts.
Surf Splendor- Where Surf Simply focuses on teaching the skills of the sport, Surf Splendor is your source for surf talk. Updated every other Monday, this podcast features incisive and exciting conversations with pro competitors, board makers and other movers and shakers in the surfing world. Unique content is the star here– recent topics of discussion have included asymmetrical surfboards, racism in the sport of surfing and Bangladeshi female surfers. David Scales and Scott Bass have a real winner here.
Down the Line Surf Talk Radio- “Honest, sincere surf talk” is what you’ll find here. This is another Scott Bass masterpiece, informing and entertaining surfers about personalities, products and competitions. Highly recommended.
Surf Guru- Having come of age on Florida’s beaches, I’m dedicating this one to all the surfers down in the Sunshine State. And while Florida isn’t exactly known for having the biggest or best waves, the home state of the great Kelly Slater is also home to a veritable armada of staunchly dedicated surfers. This podcast is for them. From Mayport all the way down to Miami, and even reports from the Gulf, if you’re a surfer who lives in or is visiting Florida, Surf Guru is a must.
