Anyone that knows me also knows that my smartphone is surgically grafted to my palm (kidding…sort of). I use it for just about everything, from organizing my day, to creating shopping lists and staying on the ever-vigilant look out for money saving deals, coupons and ways to monetize my life. And when it comes to shopping smart, saving more and earning cash in a flash, my smartphone remains my best friend.
Price Comparison Tools
I am always looking for the best price on just about everything I buy. I will often take photos of bar codes and then upload those to apps like Amazon Mobile and Red Laser, giving me the best online and in store price for whatever I buy.
Price Matching Guarantees
Target, Best Buy, Amazon and Wal-Mart are some of my favorite shopping destinations both on and offline. Using my pricing apps, I don’t have to roam all over the city to get the best deals when I am at these stores either. If I find a better price using any one of my money saving apps, I can bring that to customer service at any of these stores and they will match (or beat) the price of my items. And, while this does take a few extra minutes, it has netted me a savings of about $300 a year.
Coupons and Deals
I love the RetailMeNot app. This database allows me to share coupons and coupon codes, and will even send me deals happening nearby, helping me save 10 to 20 percent on just about everything I need (or want).
For groceries, I use the Food on the Table app to help me save more, as it gives me recipe planning tools and even builds my shopping list for me based on what’s on sale in store. Combining that with in store coupons or coupons I get from the Coupons.com mobile platform, I save more every time I shop.
I can’t tell you how many times I have left home without my rewards cards or simply lost them while cleaning out the vortex that is my purse. To combat this, so I can continue to save more regardless of where I roam, I log on to Savings Star to pinpoint digital coupons (this site adds the coupons and savings to your loyalty cards to retailers like CVS and Walgreens) and then load my loyalty cards to my CardStar app, so I earn more rewards and savings each time.
Rewards, Points and Gift Cards Galore
I use ShopKick to check in at stores, shop and earn points. After I earn a few thousand of those by completing check ins and simple activities, I cash my points in for gift cards. I’ve also learned to use CheckPoints – similar to ShopKick – and even Viggle to check in and earn points for watching my favorite television shows.
While the jury is still out on whether or not my smartphone is smarter than I am (I think it is), it continues to help me on my never ending quest for frugal living and monetizing even some of the most mundane activities.
