Battling iron deficiency anemia can be easier than you think and the symptoms aren’t cut and dry like the common cold. I’ll explain in more detail about what I have learned from my experiences and hope this information will help others.
This one became a harder symptom to diagnose in my situation. This is because years before I was found out I was anemic I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, wouldn’t you know, a sleep disorder that causes you to be tired all the time. I thought for a while that I was just getting used to my CPAP machine and I began being more tired just like I was before CPAP. But fortunately my doctor decided to run this test and that test. Basically they ran a blood count and iron test on me and found that I may have iron deficiency anemia. Simple solution, take iron pills. And eat foods that are higher in Iron then of course lets test you again from time to time. My iron levels are good now…well with proper diet, exercise, and the iron pills. Speaking of exercise.
HEARTBEAT HIGH DURING EXERCISE – (YES THATS AN ACTUAL SYMPTOM)
Working out will cause iron loss, it’s the same principle that applies when an anemic woman is menstruating her iron levels can depleted dramatically. I worked out a lot for years thinking that with better diet and exercise I would increase my energy levels and my overall health. Turns out, I could have been making things worse for me. Of course working out is a good thing to do, but you have to make sure you get the iron intake that is necessary for an anemic person or you can be hurting yourself much worse than you know. The heart rate increases (even more than it should) because your cardiovascular system is working that much harder to deliver oxygen to the rest of your body. Basically your body needs iron to make the hemoglobin which helps move oxygen throughout your body. less iron = less hemoglobin = less oxygen…you get the point.
I AM LUCKY
I am lucky because so far it seems that all I really need to do is watch my iron intake and my daily activity. I can still work out but I don’t do it as much or as intense and I make sure I’m not tired going into the gym. If I am tired and I don’t have any pills on me (which I make sure not to take too many) I can eat certain foods like chicken, spinach, beef, turkey, seems to be just about any meats that I like, pumpkin or sesame seeds…BTW I love everything bagels which have a good amount of sesame seeds. So, if I feel like I need a pick me up I just eat foods I already like. I don’t go crazy and eat hamburgers from crappy fast food chains all day but in a pinch that can help (try not to eat fast food though it’s still pretty much the worst diet plan ever).
