When it comes to arts and entertainment, Sacramento is a bustling place. With entertainment venues all around Sacramento, many very good shows and events can and do get overlooked. If you are looking for a fantastic experience that you have to put in a save the date for, film festivals are a fantastic way to go, and Sacramento has a few of them. Below are just a few of the biggest film festivals you will find taking place yearly in Sacramento.
Sacramento Film & Music Festival
2014 marks the 15th season of the Sacramento International Film & Music Festival, a multi-day event that takes place towards the end of summer during the first or second week of September. The Festival features a blend of standout foreign independent films and showcases local talent with the event culmination being a mini Festival in and of itself with a local film event and awards show entitled: “A Place Called Sacramento.” This festival is a family event with something for everyone of all ages, so unlike some of the other festivals on this list you don’t have to leave the kids at home to attend this one.
The Sacramento Horror Film Festival
While the name and production company have changed a few times over the years, for as long as I can remember Sacramento has always had a horror film festival that takes place in mid to late October. The 2014 dates are October 10-12. I have always been a particular fan of this film festival because they always do a great job of creating a beautiful spectacle of the whole event. Most of the movies chosen are B grade films and many are chosen because of their so bad they’re actually good quality. No Horror Film Fest would be complete without a full scale live performance of Rocky Horror and this festival is no exception. If you want the biggest and best Rocky Horror experience in Sacramento, the Sacramento Horror Film Festival is definitely where you will find it.
Sacramento Food Film Fest
This is a fairly new festival but has quickly become one of my favorite events in Sacramento in just a few short years. Founded in 2012, the 2014 version of this festival stretched 10 full days and featured, as the name suggests, some amazing film about food. The festival caters to everyone with this year featuring a variety of films from “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs” for the family and kid night, to the more tongue in cheek ” Slow Food Story.” The overarching theme of the festival is food awareness and attending makes it very hard to not want to adopt a full on healthy eating lifestyle after being exposed to the numerous benefits of such a lifestyle at this festival.
