With Father’s Day getting close, one question looms in the minds of a lot of people: What can I do to honor the father figures in my life (husband, father, son, grandfather etc.)? Here are some ideas to consider for your male role model.
Before getting the gift ask yourself a few questions to help you find the right gift.
- What are the activities that this person does for enjoyment?
- What do you admire about the person?
- What do you do together?
These questions will help you think clearly about what is most valued about the relationship. As a father myself, I do not care about cost. When my son’s talk with me and let me know they care, it is the most valuable gift they could give me. It is harder to get the time now that they are older and are out on their own. Here are some gift ideas that are outside of the old standby gifts.
Make a special video or photo presentation that can be viewed in a digital frame or on a computer. Making the gift reminds dad of all the things you did together, what you think of him as a father and builds something he can see whenever he wants.
If you admire something specific about your dad, you could focus on that and get a gift that reflects it. For example:
- He is gifted in mechanical things. Find out if there is a tool or item related to it that he could use and get that for him.
- If he likes to golf. Then golf balls, a round of golf at his favorite local course, or some other golf related thing.
If you do some activity together, look at what he might need or want that will make that time memorable for both of you.
Growing up my dad was very good at building houses, fixing cars and a multitude of things. A few years ago I found common ground with him in the process of restoring an old rusted bike. I worked on bicycles and had become good at fixing them but had little knowledge on painting. We worked together and restored the bike. My aunt rides it today and it reminds me of that time before he died.
Your gift will have special meaning for you and your dad for years to come if it is from the heart.
