In a family of eight kids like mine, birthdays are always imminent. You just celebrate one, and another follows directly behind, sometimes just days apart. This has become even more amplified with natural family growth due to my 2 oldest daughters’ boyfriends. Not only do we have our immediate family birthdays, but the extended family birthdays are growing as well.
Over the years, I’ve implemented a few of my own family birthday traditions which help to celebrate each person’s special day with festive activities. These fun additions to our family member’s birthdays create a feeling of anticipation which even my young adults still look forward to.
Balloon Wake Up Call
All of my children, young and old appreciate being woken up surrounded by vibrantly colored balloons all over their bed. They know I’ll be up blowing these into existence the night before, which always keeps the interest brewing overnight. I have used different sizes and colors to adorn the bedroom and bed itself with. They love starting their birthday morning like this. It begins their special day on such a positive note.
Photo Poster or Wall
Create a photo wall or poster board decorated with photos of your child from the past year. My kids all love reminiscing about the friends/ people they were with, and the activities they were involved in. You can get siblings involved in this creative way to celebrate a brother or sister’s birthday by having them put the wall or board together or do some artwork on the poster or wall to personalize their sibling’s special day.
Homemade Happy Birthday Signs
We’ve spent many birthdays making homemade signs that wish our birthday boy or girl a happy birthday. We have made these on strung or taped together printing paper, with the birthday boy or girl’s name decoratively drawn on using cheerful festive colors and designs. This is another great way to keep siblings busy with fun artwork activities for the upcoming birthday event. It also helps to promote family unity.
Gift Treasure Hunt
When the games have been played and the candles have been blown out, why not have a gift treasure hunt? This is a great way to conclude the birthday festivities with a fun activity which adds even more excitement to the gift opening, but be informed…lots of happy squealing goes along with this hunt. You may need to brace your ears.
