Pet owners have been aware of the trouble with purchasing pet products from China. For several years now there have been numerous recalls for pet foods and treats. When faced with a reasonable choice between domestic and Chinese products the wise pet owner will choose domestic every time. Many factors force our choice and sometimes it is totally unwitting decision.
It is known that many Chinese pet foods and treats have been the reason for thousands of pet deaths and incalculable amounts of illness among cats and dogs.
After reading this list of problems and practices that result in choosing the most dangerous of foods for our pets, give this some serious thought since your pets life could be in jeopardy.
There are many reasons why picking safe food with no Chinese connection is difficult.
1/ First is the cost of better pet food made in the United States. We all know that Chinese goods of any kind are cheaper because the cost of labor is minimal and the regulations are almost none in that country. Pet owners in this economy practice money saving with their own food, often replacing name brands with generic or store brands. The same thing often happens with pet food. It comes down to dollars and cents. They choose those products that are less expensive and often risk their pet’s very life.
2/Many people know that as a country, we constantly produce and manufacture less and less in the US. The next problem in the ending up with products connected with China is the fact that they produce about 70 % of pet food ingredients, so even when we choose American, it may be compromised by containing risky ingredients.
3/ Convenience is often the culprit. It is so much easier in this day of crammed schedules and little time to get everything done that we resort to the Internet. Many of the companies selling online and with no shipping cost are Chinese in origin.
4/Another problem for local and domestic stores are they must buy in quantity to get a competitive price. When using a wholesaler to accomplish this, it is soon discovered that China is one of the largest wholesalers so once again, you are buying products originating in China.
5/Many products claim that they are free of any China association, but that is untrue since even when they honestly believe that they again contain the ingredients necessary to produce many foods and treats for pets. This industry has been monopolized by Chinese companies.
6/Products from China are often mislabeled. Deceptive labeling can be a serious problem. For example of 140 pet foods that claim to contain beef, a minimum of four of them had not even a trace of beef so were unable to provide the protein pets need. China’s laws addressing product labeling are far from adequate.
7/Jerky pet treats from China alone are responsible for killing thousands and producing a variety of illnesses in cats and dogs.
8/There has been recall after recall of pet products originating in China because of the resulting renal failure, convulsions, hives, lethargy, tremors, vomiting and diarrhea. Many pet foods contain melamine and are tainted in other ways as well.
