Located in the heart of Canada, Wedderspoon Organic is an internationally known health and wellness brand that emphasizes on using honey in all of their ingredients. With everything from specialty raw and organic honeys to body care products to even candles and lozenges, they are consistently striving to keep all of the natural benefits of honey from being compromised. Recently, I had the chance to catch up with the brand’s CEO, Fiona Lawman and Kelly Snyder, the PR Manager of Wedderspoon directly. Here is what they had to tell me…
(Q) Hello. How are you? Tell me a little more about the Wedderspoon brand…
Wedderspoon exclusively sources their raw honey varieties from the most pristine areas around the world. Our honeys are some of the world’s finest raw and organic honeys that are crafted to the highest standards of quality. Additionally, we are proud to announce that Wedderspoon is the first and only Non GMO verified Manuka Honey provider in the world. After realizing the amazing properties that raw honey possesses and how beneficial it is to the skin, Wedderspoon has developed a superior line of organic body care products.
(Q) What inspired you to create Wedderspoon? Tell me a little more about the inspiration behind the brand…
The company was originally created in 2005 on Vancouver Island, Canada by friends of mine, Catherine Wedderspoon and Sebastien Martin. Catherine’s mother came to visit from the UK and was looking in the shops for New Zealand Manuka Honey (something she took on a daily basis). After not having much luck finding any and a great deal of research, Catherine and Sebastien launched the Wedderspoon brand of manuka honey. After learning more about the amazing properties of Manuka Honey and that it was very popular and widely used in other countries I did some research of my own, and in 2006 I started the US division of Wedderspoon. To serve the UK and Europe in 2012 a UK division of Wedderspoon was opened.
(Q) Currently, what are your best selling products? Tell me a little more about Wedderspoon’s most popular products…
Our Manuka Honey is definitely our best selling product at this time but our specialty raw honeys from New Zealand, Greece and Chile are also becoming increasingly popular. Ulmo honey from Chile has amazing properties apparently similar to Manuka Honey, and our Fir Honey from Greece, as a honeydew honey, has one of the highest antioxidant levels and mineral content of all honeys. These honeys are all excellent paired with artisan cheeses and fresh fruit.
(Q) What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is produced by bees from the Manuka Bush, a bush native to New Zealand. It has been found that Manuka Honey contains healthy properties that many other honeys do not have.
(Q) Is it true that mixing raw honey in a hot drink will cause it to lose it’s natural properties? Tell me a little more about this…
We definitely do not recommend mixing the raw honey into boiling drinks. The heat would destroy the naturally occurring healthy bee enzymes and properties present in raw honey that are so beneficial to our health.
(Q) What is the difference between active 12+ and active 16+?
We consistently strive to keep all of the natural benefits of the honey from being compromised. The Scale 12+ and 16+ are simply potency indicators of a total average of the multiple MEASURABLE components we look for in our RAW, Unpasteurized, Natural, Authentic Manuka Honey. Some of these factors are pollen count, PH level consistency, total peroxide activity levels, antioxidant levels, live enzymes and phenolic compounds. We also test for over 250 chemical residues.
(Q) Is bee venom actually healthy?
There has been a lot of research done on the positive health benefits of bee venom and Manuka honey in the UK and in New Zealand. Beekeepers found that after being stung by the bees that their arthritis symptoms diminished greatly. Bee venom is also used in apitherapy treatments and now available through our Queen of the Hive organic cosmetic line.
(Q) Can someone who is diabetic or someone who is watching their carbohydrates use this honey?
We always suggest that an individual consults with their Doctor, if they have any health related questions. It is said that honey could potentially help regulate the sugar intake from diabetic sufferers. However, as a food supplier, we cannot make medical claims.
(Q) Aside from honey, you also offer several body care products. Everything from the ‘Bee Venom Face Cream’ to various soaps and lip balms. Tell me a little more about these products…
Our Bee venom Face Cream as well as our other body care products are made using only the most natural and organic ingredients. Our products do not contain any preservatives or chemicals such as parabens or sodium lauryl sulfates.
Wedderspoon’s Contour Face cream with Bee venom contains 70% organic and natural ingredients including premium bee venom, New Zealand organic manuka active (OMA) 16+ honey and natural botanical oils. Bee venom in combination with manuka honey and botanical oils work to stimulate, nourish and intensely moisturize.

(Q) For all of those natural health and beauty lovers around the world reading this interview, what would you like them to know about Wedderspoon? What is next for the brand?
We are very excited, this month we are launching our all natural, chemical and cruelty free Manuka Honey beauty and body care line under the brand name Queen of the Hive. Coming soon are some new wonderful new additions to the body care line.
