I’ve been a professional makeup artist for twenty years and I’ve seen so many products that promise to even out skin tone come and go. Remember the makeup airbrush kit that supposedly painted away fine lines and wrinkles? What about mineral powders that would cancel out redness? I admit some of these products were spot on (I love my Kabuki brush) but others, not so much. If you really want to get a handle on uneven skin tone, you can, just by making a few changes to your makeup ensemble. I use these cheats on my customers all the time!
Blend a dab of primer into your foundation. Sure, you can layer the products on but this method is much more effective. Squirt a dot of primer onto your makeup sponge then add a slightly larger dot of foundation. Blend them on to your skin together and apply it to your entire face. You may have to reapply the primer and foundation to the sponge several times to get good coverage. Start in the center of your face and work outward for a smooth, even finish.
Cancel out unwanted tones with the opposite colors. The two colors I see most on skin are blue (under eye bags) and red (breakouts, flushing and hormone changes) but you can hide those shades. For hiding blue, use a concealer that has a slightly orange base. Cover up red spots with concealers and foundations that have a green base. Do you have extremely red of blue spots? Reach for the yellow concealer. In these cases, prime, conceal and then apply foundation.
Apply foundation according to your skin type. I find that women who have blemish-prone, oily skin can rock cream foundation if it is applied correctly. First, select a cream foundation that has a water base, not an oil base. Dampen a sponge and then apply the product. The results? Even skin! For dry to combination skin, apply foundation with a brush. Buff the product onto the skin starting at the center of the face, of course. Swirl it on using a circular pattern. This will give the skin a clean, smooth finish.
Just a few changes to your foundation application can really make a difference to your overall look. Do take care of your skin. Keep it hydrated inside and out, protect it from the sun and get plenty of sleep.
