The Energizer Recharge Smart Charger is a Charger for rechargeable NIMH batteries in the size AA or AAA. It will charge 2 to 4 batteries at one time but they must be all AA or AAA. If you are charging just 2 then they both have to be on one side.
The Charger plugs right into your wall socket and shows you if your batteries are bad, or you accidentally put a regular battery in there. In that case it will blink rapidly. If you have the right kind of batteries and they are good it will give you the time required for charging them. It usually takes about 8hrs to charge. As it is charging it will show a count down so that you can easily look at it and see how much time there is left to charge.
One thing I did not care for is that the plug on this unit does not swivel so if you have plugs like mine that are horizontal this charger will be sideways on your wall. It is not a huge deal but would be much nicer if I could see the cool read outs looking straight on instead of having to turn my head to the side.
The unit came with 4 rechargeable AA batteries.
The charging unit has an auto shut off so when your batteries are fully charged they can sit in the charger without being damaged.
Figuring out how to use the Energizer Recharge Smart Charger was really not much of a challenge. I really did not even need to consult the instructions, I just placed the batteries in the charger and plugged it into the wall and it stated that they would be ready in about 8 hours. I checked back at intervals and watched the charger count down the hours until they were done as indicated on the display.
I have not encountered a bad battery yet but when you try to put the wrong battery in there or a bad one the unit will flash rapidly. From reading the instruction manual I learned that when this happens I won’t know which of the two batteries is bad because it will flash if only one of them is bad. This could be quite the puzzle so I guess I would need to have at least one battery that I know is good so that I can tell for sure which is bad. I would hate to through away a good battery thinking it was bad.
Interestingly this unit states that it has a limited lifetime warranty that covers the charger and the batteries but does not cover normal wear and tear. I am not sure what that means. I can not imagine that the batteries would be warrantied for my entire lifetime but maybe that is the limited part. I love how they write these warranties so you are left scratching your head. The phone number to call for warranty information is 1-800-383-7323
Final thoughts and rating
I would probably give the Energizer Recharge Smart Charger 3.5 stars but will round up to 4 because of the fact that this was quite economical and performs as expected. To get 5 stars the unit would need to have a twist plug so I could place it in the upright position regardless of the position of my outlets. In addition the unit would need to charge each of the four batteries independently and also test them individually. It’s a decent unit as is, it works and was reasonably priced so I feel the 4 star rating is fair.
