When we eat for nutrition, we want to gain the most benefits from the food we intake that we can. No matter what it is you’re eating, you should always aim for food that will supplement your health and help your body function as it should. Since my work constantly involves high brain power and concentration, I’ve been looking to load up on foods that focus on brain function and stability. Here are some great foods you should eat to give your brain a natural healthy boost.
Tuna or Salmon– Deep water dwelling fish, like salmon and tuna, provide brain essential omega-3 fatty acids which promote healthy brain function. Along with improved brain function these fats have anti-inflammatory properties that further help your body.
Blueberries– The widely loved and craved superfood blueberry is not only delicious but also helps promote a healthy brain. Blueberries help shield the brain from oxidizing stress and could prove useful in reducing the detrimental effects of age related conditions. Studies have shown that blueberries improve learning capacity and motor skills in aging rats and mice and that effect could carry over to humans. One cup daily, in any form, can improve your brain function dramatically.
Nuts & Seeds– Nuts and seeds contain healthy fats and a healthy dose of vitamin E, which could lead to a prevention in eventual cognitive decline as you age. An ounce of walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, or any other nuts will add a healthy boost to your brain. You can eat these raw or roasted for their health benefits.
Avocados– These are one of my favorite foods and studies have shown that avocados can be almost as effective as blueberries in helping brain function. The avocado is an extremely fatty fruit but the fat it contains is monounsaturated fat, a fat that promotes a healthy blood flow improving the health of the brain. Avocados have also been known to reduce blood pressure and hypertension. Adding 1/4-1/2 of this fruit will help prevent cognitive decline.
Whole Grains– Your brain needs steady energy to work at full capacity throughout the day. For proper body function and energy we need a steady supply of glucose in our bloodstream to use. Choose low glucose indexed foods which will slowly release glucose into your system continuously during your waking hours. Choose brown cereals, breads, wraps, and pastas instead of their white flour counterparts.
Broccoli– Broccoli is a great, healthy superfood that improves brain function through the form of vitamin K in your body. Vitamin K has been known to help increase cognitive function and enhance brain power at any age. Eat this between meals for a great healthy snack your brain will thank you for later.
Sage– Sage has a long history of being an herb that helps mental clarity and function. Many people choose to burn sage as an incense that supposedly helps concentration and improve brain function. While most studies concentrate on sage oil as the main component, recently people have been adding it to their eating habits as well.
Grapes– Purple or red grapes contain the phytonutrient known as resveratol which has been shown to increase blood circulation like many other foods on this list. Improved circulation means easier cell repair and upkeep, keeping your brain happy and healthy. Red wine has a concentration of this chemical that raises good and lowers bad cholesterol.
Add any of these to your diet for an extra boots of brain power and health. One of these alone can make a difference but a combination could keep your brain healthy for years to come. Enjoy any of these foods to promote healthy brain function and longevity. Enjoy!
