Shelves or wood pieces
Brackets and screws
Hot glue or wood glue
Sure, it’s nice to have a fancy wine rack, if that’s what you like, but don’t you think that most wine racks are entirely too expensive? I shopped for a wine rack recently and I couldn’t believe the prices on an object that was designed to hold a few bottles of wine. Of course, the ones that are available are very nice, and look lovely in the kitchen, but what if you don’t even have room to set one on a counter or table? I happen to know of a very simple project to make a non-traditional wine rack on the wall. It’s suitable for any size kitchen – or other room – and can hold several bottles of your favorite wine. A shelf wine rack is easy, handy, and eye-catching.
A shelf wine rack is just what it says it is – a shelf. However, if you enjoy wine, you might want to install more than one shelf. The shelves that you use should be just a little longer than the height of a wine bottle. You’ll find suitable shelves at a home improvement store or you can easily make your own. All you have to do is cut a plank of wood into equal-size pieces, hang brackets, and set the wood pieces on them. If you purchase the plank at a home improvement store they will likely cut it to the lengths that you need at no charge, or for a minimal fee.
Hanging the shelves is easy; screw the brackets into the wall (on studs) and set a shelf on each set of them. The shelves take just a few minutes to hang but there is one more thing that you need to do: ensure that the bottles stay on the shelves by gluing wine corks to them. Using wood glue (or hot glue), stand a wine cork near the edge of the shelf, and attach it to the wood. Put two or more of the corks – spaced evenly apart – across the length of each shelf.
There are various designs that you can create for the wine rack. You can put the shelves in a vertical row, stagger them, or even paint them. And, instead of corks, you can use dowel pegs, wooden blocks, or similar things, to keep the bottles from rolling. Lay a wine bottle on its side, slide it onto the shelf, and the corks will make sure that the bottle stays where it is until you’re ready to drink it.
