Sugar addiction can cause various health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dental issues, memory problems, hyperactivity, some cancers, attention problems, and digestive issues. Yet, despite all the health risks people continue to eat sugary foods and drinks cause they are addictive. Here are some tips on how you can overcome sugar addiction or cut back your sugar intake for the sake of your health.
Cut Back on Buying Sugary Foods
Don’t stop buying sugary foods right away or else you will experience some painful withdrawal symptoms that are no fun. Lots of headaches and fatigue is common for someone who’s trying to cut back on sugar or remove it from their diet for good. During the first couple of weeks cut your buying of sugary junk foods in and then cut back once more after the third or fourth week. If you want to remove sugar completely from your diet then you just keep cutting back buying sugary foods each week until you reach your goal.
Eating properly will help you overcome sugar withdrawal. It is recommended that you consume at least three meals a day and a snack or two depending on how many calories you want to take in daily. They need to be balanced meals though and try switching to whole grain foods. Avoid eating the same thing every day and serve at least one fruit or vegetable at each meal. When crave something sweet reach for dried fruits or fresh fruits. Also, be sure to take some vitamins daily that contains Omega-3 acids.
Know Your Triggers
Some people will eat sugary foods when they are stressed out or anxious about something. Then there are people who will turn to sugar based foods when they are lonely or bored. You need to find something to do when you are sure that certain feelings trigger your sugar cravings. When you feel this way go for a walk, read books, listen to music, go fishing, go swimming, go shopping, hang out, and video games.
Join a Gym
One good way to combat sugar addiction is to join a gym or start exercising more often to help curb cravings. Strive to do some type of physical exercise an hour a day three days a week. If you can’t afford a gym you can buy some fitness dvds or you can go out and walk if its nice out. In case of bad weather you could always walk around the mall or walk in your city’s sidewalk.
