Nests are iconic of spring, but they are more than just a place for birds to lay their eggs and raise their young. They are amazing structures that are built using twigs, string, mud and other suitable finds. Birds meticulously build them one small piece at a time, but you can create much simpler versions that include faux eggs that look incredibly real. The finished works of natural art can be used for craft purposes, home decorating, baby shower favors and more.
Easy Plastic Bottle Top Nests
Plastic soda pop bottle tops make fantastic mini nests for all sorts of decorative purposes. Save plastic pop bottle tops, and buy natural shredded wood filler to use as nesting material. You will also need plain brown washi tape, a pencil, hot glue and two or three Tic Tac peppermint candies. If you want your mini nests to double as refrigerator magnets, you will also need small round magnets.
Begin by wrapping the plastic bottle tops with brown washi tape. It will cover up the color of the plastic and any accompanying logos. Washi tape is a lot like masking tape, and it is easy to tear into small pieces.
Next, plug in and preheat the glue gun. After adding a layer of hot glue to the bottom of the first plastic bottle top, gather and apply a small amount of natural shredded wood filler. Use the eraser end of a pencil to push the material into the hot glue. After it cools, use the tip of your finger to create an impression to make it look like a mini nest.
Apply a dot of hot glue to two or three peppermint Tic Tac brand candies, and attach them to the inside of the nest. If desired, let the glue dry before turning it over and attaching a magnet.
Create Woven Grapevine Nests
Grapevines make fantastic nesting material for birds, but they are also great for crafting decorative nests. Soak dried grapevines in water for at least an hour. Cut the vines to the desired length, and begin twisting and weaving them around each other to create mini nests. They do not have to be perfect.
Finish by gluing small light blue jelly beans inside of each one. Berry Blue flavored Jelly Belly brand candies are the ideal color and size. The completed grapevine nests would make fantastic decorations for dining tables, shadowboxes, three-dimensional displays, spring candle rings, wreaths and anything else that you can dream up.
