If your board games are missing a few parts, do not throw them away. Do not order new ones either. Alternates can usually be found online, but they are not necessary. They can be easily replaced without spending a lot of money and waiting days for the order. Consider these easy options for replacing lost pieces, and enjoy your favorites again. The new parts might even be better than those that were lost.
Replace the Pieces with Flat Buttons
Games with parts that were somewhat flat can be replaced with plastic buttons. Look through your sewing and crafting supplies, or buy them from a local discount store. They are available in every color imaginable, and many styles can be stacked. Look for those without shanks, and replace your missing pieces. Even if they look nothing like the originals, chances are they will work just as well.
Plastic Pop Bottle Tops
If you need board game pieces that are taller than buttons, consider using plastic pop bottle tops. They are easy to grasp since they have vertical lines around the sides, and they also come in a wide range of colors. If desired, they can be decorated or personalized with colored duct tape, electrical tape or washi tape. Simply trace around the tops, and completely change their appearance with a durable overlay.
Use Decorative Miniatures
Board game pieces do not have to be round. If the board is flat and the parts do not have to be stacked, consider using decorative miniatures. Items that are meant to be displayed on shadowbox shelves can be used as replacement parts as long as they are sturdy enough to handle again and again. They are perfect replacements for a Monopoly game, but they are great alternatives for many others.
Create Colorful Cork Slices
Corks are good for more than just plugging wine bottles and creating homemade memo boards. They make fantastic game pieces. Use a sharp utility knife to cut them into wheels. Finish by coloring them with permanent markers. As long as they were evenly trimmed, they can be stacked when necessary.
Use Flat Glass Marbles
Flat glass marbles are typically used to hold floral stems in clear vases. They can be found in stores that sell faux flowers and related supplies. Consider buying a bag that includes an assortment of colors. They make phenomenal replacement pieces for board games. They cannot be stacked, but they will easily slide across any board that you use.
