If you were to look around my house, you’d take note of at least one of my simpler home improvement projects. By simpler, I mean I either lacked proper supplies or simply found an easier way to do things. From duct tape to 2X4 planks, my home is full of quick fixes and ingenuity. While some people think the “Work smart, not hard” motto is mere laziness, I find it to be nothing short of brilliant. These methods save our family hundreds to thousands of dollars each year.
As the summer heat rolled in, I knew that our window unit air conditioners had to be taken out of storage soon. These units are energy efficient and much smaller than the windows of our old house. As I unfolded the fitting tabs on each side, I quickly realized that it simply wasn’t going to create a proper seal as-is. One must also tilt a window unit backward slightly to avoid indoor dripping from the unit. I decided to cut up some table cloth and fold it over to match the width of each side panel.I then used black electrical tape to hold the cloth in place. Just outside the window, a 2X4 plank is wedged to hold the air conditioner aloft, as it is turned slightly to the outdoor ground. No one can argue the results, this simple fix allows us to keep our home cool without having to buy more products.
Although the quick fix to my air conditioner is hardly noticeable, the way we’ve used our dryer for the past few years is nothing short of thrifty. When the sensor on the machine’s door broke, the dryer was unable to start due to the dryer sensing the door was still open when it was not. In the most brilliant act of ingenuity I’ve seen to date, my mother-in-law simply tilted a chair against the door to force it to shut tighter, allowing the dryer to start. Although. we recently replaced this dryer, I will never forget the years we spent jamming objects against the door to start drying our laundry.
If you’ve never seen rooms separated by curtains and shower rods, you’ve never been to my house. Living in such an old house, it is sometimes impossible to heat or cool every room. In order to keep our family room at comfortable temperatures, we’ve hung a curtain in the open doorway. In doing so, we eliminated the need for purchasing an entirely new door and we’ve seen great results. While the rest of our home may reach crazy temperatures, we can always find comfort in the family room. If nothing else, it forces us to spend quality time together.
Some may call it lazy, others may call it brilliant. I simply call them solutions. If you are picky about everything and have the money to spend, by all means you should take the more expensive options. When you have to ration your money, you still need solutions to everyday problems. You may think these fixes are odd but I can only argue that they work.
