Up here in the Tri-State area, drive-in movie theaters have become a rare treat to both enjoy and find. However, if you are willing to travel a bit for the adventure there are three theaters that can offer a really great experience.
The Delsea Drive-In
Off of Delsea Drive (NJ- 47) in Vineland, NJ stands one of the area’s longest running attractions – The Delsea Drive In. For the fair price of $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, the Delsea Drive-In offers an entire evening’s worth of entertainment in the comfort of your own car. In fact, tickets are sold by the screen not the movie, which always includes a double feature of multiple top billed movies. With two screens showing features simultaneously, there is ample opportunity to choose a pair of movies that is just right for your outing, making it a local favorite. Outside food is not permitted, but there is a concession stand that sells movie-snacking classics as well as many hot food items for the heartier appetite. They have even begun offering a low-carb menu for the more health conscientious. It is accessible for most by a simple drive on one of New Jersey’s most historic roads, it offers ample public parking, and is easily accessed by NJ Transit.
Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre
Located in Orefield, PA, Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre is not only a local favorite, but it is also America’s oldest running Drive-In operating consistently since 1934. Shankweiler’s also offers a double feature for its admission price with one screen showing the evenings movie pairing and ticket prices at $9 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Shankweiler’s offers a new digital projection screen and the latest in sound and clarity having installed all new equipment in 2013. They also do not allow outside food, but do offer a wide variety of foods at their snack bar including hot dogs, bbq brisket, and cotton candy. Shankweiler’s is conveniently located off of Route 309, just outside of Philadelphia. A quick ride up I-476 to the Lehigh Valley exit will take you straight to Shankweiler’s Drive-In. There is public parking with radio access for sound.
The Warwick Drive-In Theater
Just a short distance north of New Jersey is the Warwick Drive-In, located in Warwick, NY. Touting a park-like setting on over 70 acres of farmland, the Warwick Drive-In is the most classic drive-in experience. While they have multiple screens playing double features simultaneously, they still employ the pole and speaker system for sound. Ticket prices are $9 for adults, $6 for children under 12 an free for children under 4 years old. Warwick Drive-In offers a full snack bar that includes traditional movie candy, hot foods, and ice cream. From New Jersey, a quick ride up NJ-23 to NJ-94 will send you straight to the Warwick Drive-In Theatre. Public transportation, however, is not easily accessibly in the rural area. Strategically placed on grassy farmland, there is an abundance of parking for car viewing as well as picnic style movie watching.
In the Tri-State area, there is no longer an abundance of drive-in theater’s to choose from. Yet, with a little sense of adventure and a good GPS, there are quality drive-in experiences to be had in the locale.
