My neighbor and good friend let me know about Draw Something Free, an App for iPhone, iPad and Android. I have an iPhone and iPad and first downloaded it on my phone but then also put it on my iPad. The App is free on both but I think its a little easier to draw on my iPad2 so I mostly play the game there.
Downloading The App
I found Draw Something free in a few seconds. I noticed there is also a paid version for 99 cents but figured I would try the free one. I think if I had known how much I would like it, I would have paid the 99 cents to go ad free, plus I think it starts you off with more coins in the paid version. I was going to upgrade but read some comments on their help page about people having issues merging their games after upgrading so I decided to stick with the free version.
How to play Draw Something
This game is very much like Pictionary. You draw something and then your friend watching you drawing it and has to guess what it is. To me the best part of the whole game is that you get to watch the other person drawing, erasing or anything else they may do. It is not in real time, but the App records the drawing in progress and then replays it for you. When you are the guesser you will see the drawing as it is being drawn and at the same time you will see how many letters are in the word and a few numbers to choose from.
Setting up a Players Account: To set up an account you can sign up with your email address or through Facebook. Either way is easy but if you want to connect with others, signing up through Facebook would be the preferred way to sign up. I did give my email but have not gotten any spam.
Finding Players: To find someone to play with the easiest way is to connect with Facebook. I know that a lot of people do not like Facebook but if you like to play games and want to connect I suggest having a Facebook account even if you never use it for anything else. My husband refuses to have Facebook so I had to make him an account with his email and then find him by the user name I set him up with.
Starting a game: When you want to create a game just tap “Create Game” and then choose to look through Facebook, User Name, Email, or Random Player. If you choose a Random Player you will get to play with someone else who has also chosen this method of starting a game.
Does anyone Win?: This game is not competitive. It really is just for fun. You want your friends to guess your words and you want them to guess yours. If you need your games to have a winner and loser then this might not be for you. I happen to love this game. When you guess right both players get one to three coins. Coins can be saved and used to buy things.
Coins and in game Purchases: You do not have to buy anything in this game but if you want to you can purchase coins for the following
400 coins $1.99
1200 coins $4.99
3000 coins $9.99
10,000 coins $24.99
I have not bought any coins because I think it is more fun to earn them playing the game. With the Coins you collect or buy you can get Bombs or extra Color sets to help with Drawing. Bombs are used to get different word choices to draw or to get rid of some of the letters in your tray when guessing.
You will see when someone has played and it is your turn when you open the app. You can also set up your App to send a reminder when it’s your turn to play. When you start your turn you will first see the other person guessing your word. If you watch it all the way through you can see at which point the person guesses your word People get multiple guesses and there is no time limit. If you want to skip through rather than watching them guess you can tap Skip and it will just show you if they guessed your word. It will also show you any wrong guesses. If they do not guess your word and tap Pass, it will tell you there too.
Then you will tap Go for your turn to Guess. You have to tap again to guess and if you get busy with something you can just close the app and it will open again at that spot. When you tap to guess you will see the other person drawing and get a chance using 12 letters provided at the bottom. If you want to get rid of some of the letters use a bomb if you have any and it will blow up some of the letters not being used. Type letters into the slots provided. If the word has 6 letters there will be 6 boxes. If you can not guess then you tap pass and no coins are awarded. If you guess correctly you will get one to three coins and the other player gets them also.
After you guess then it is your turn to draw and the App will show you three words to choose from. Each choice is worth one to three coins and is graded easy to hard. Pick your word or if you want new words use a bomb if you have any. Bombs cost 400 coins for ten bombs. Once you pick a word and tap to start drawing you will see colors to choose from at the top as well as an eraser and a pencil to choose from four point widths from fine point to wide point. The eraser can also be used to draw in white over a color and you can choose the same point sizes. There is also a garbage can if you want to scrap your drawing and try a new one. When you are done click done.
When you start playing you only have a few colors and you can buy more color sets for 249 coins. Each set adds five new colors.
To access your account click the little circle icon at the top right and you can turn sounds on and off, access your account information, or get help.
Sounds: there is no music with game and the sounds add to the game so I leave mine on. They are just little clicks and things like that.
Account: The Account tab shows your user name which you can change if you want to. The game will give you a silly name so I chose one that my husband could better identify me with. With my other friends they see my Facebook name. You can also change your email or password in the Account Tab.
Need Help?: If you need help you can tap to get help and be directed to their website message board that gives all kinds of help and a place to ask a question.
A Few Final Thoughts
I really love Draw Something Free and it’s a fun game for most any age. I would watch my kids playing this with random people because you never know…. I have not had any issues with playing the game although I did noticed the game slow to respond on a Sunday night and was thinking perhaps the game servers were busy with so many players. Otherwise it is always fully operational and quick.
One thing that would be nice in this game is a chat box to make comments about drawings etc. If I want to say something I just write it in the drawing box before I start my drawing and then discard it. That seems to work but a chat box would be nice.
Also I would like to see a replay of old games. It seems you only get one chance to view the drawing. It would be fun to watch some of them over again.
