Many preppers believe in bugging out instead of bugging in. Although this creates much risk and danger, it has its advantages. Many preppers who live in urban or suburban environments might need to go with this plan as being in the city is too dangerous. This may be the case or you might live on a homestead but have all of your resources else where. Lets look at some of the things you want to include in your bug out plan.
You obviously need a way of transportation (refer to my ultimate prepper vehicle article). Your entire plan can fail or succeed in direct correlation of your vehicle selection. Keep this in mind, do you have a means to bring every little thing that you want to bring? Can your vehicle withstand extreme weather conditions, does it have off road capabilities, keep these questions in mind when creating your plan. If you already have a plan, consider acquiring a new vehicle or upgrading your current one to better suit your plan.
Do you have an adequate supply line? Can you bring enough food and water or do you have enough food and water to survive at your bug out location? Also consider the sustainability of your location. You must pick some where with a reliable water source. Here you will be able to have a reliable food source(fish) you can wash clothes, drink the water and use it for irrigation. With out a large water source within 5 miles from your bug out location, things will not run nearly as smoothly.
Also, consider what kind of defensive capabilities you have. Is there a sharp rise in elevation where your location is? Do you have a large building with fences around or perhaps a watchtower? The ideal location is a 2-3 story building with a basement for storage with fences and 3 watchtowers set up in a triangular manner, areas for a garden with an irrigation system, adequate cover such as cement walls and all on top of a hill. Here you will be able to employ several different kinds of defenses such as barbed wire, land mines, trenches, punji sticks, which is just sharp wooden stakes and caltrops. Make your location very difficult to traverse on foot unless taken by direct route which will provide zero cover for an attacking force.
All of these improvement will greatly improve your chances of survival in your bug out location. Make this location as close as possible to your current location so that reaching this destination is as easy as possible especially in times of crisis for there will be thousands if not millions of people who are trying to get out of the city at the same time that you are. Avoid main roads, supermarkets, population centers and places with no animals to hunt and no water to be drank.
