In this little box, I’m supposed to come up with words to inspire, words that will convince visitors to donate to my site. Perhaps I should copy and paste someone else’s heartfelt message about the necessity of water and the responsibility we all share as global citizens to take care of one another. I should, but I won’t.
In all honesty, I’m having considerable trouble writing a personal appeal because for me, it’s impossible to imagine a life without sufficient drinking water, in short, the life of an African child. I have donated to various organizations such as The Water Project, most of them focusing their efforts on relieving the socioeconomic poverty prevalent in so many parts of Africa. But never have I really been able to imagine my life without water.
Even as I type this, I see several half-empty (or half-full, depending on how you look at it) water bottles beside me, well within arm’s length. I take a shower every day in luxurious steamy water that’s the perfect temperature to soothe my muscles and wash away the banal dust of everyday problems. Even when I wash the dinner dishes or water our front lawn, I don’t have to worry about water conservation because I know that whenever I turn on the faucet or twist the nozzle, more water will come out. It always does.
I know I said before that I simply couldn’t imagine a life without sufficient drinking water, but now, having typed this out, I think I can. I look at everything I have, and I’m reminded of all that I take for granted. Water doesn’t always come out of nozzles or faucets for everyone.
But it should. Please donate so that we can make this dream a reality.
