Easter is less than a month away, and decorating for the holiday is definitely not in my budget. Instead of ignoring the holiday completely, I have decided to make some decor myself. Not only are DIY Easter decorations easy on the budget, they are a lot of fun to make with the kids.
Easter Egg Garland
Plastic Easter eggs are cheap, and you may even be able to find them at a thrift store. Drill or poke two holes in the same end of each egg, so you can string wire or string through. Add a dab of hot glue if you don’t want the eggs to slide on the string or wire. String enough to make a garland to hang over the mantle, doorways, or even wrap around a pole on your porch. Nothing says Easter more than plastic Easter eggs!
Embroidery Thread Eggs
You will need skeins of embroidery thread, which you can find at the craft store 2-3 for a $1, or even at a thrift store. You will also need school glue, or a fabric stiffener, and water balloons. Inflate the balloon just enough so it resembles an egg. In a bowl dilute the glue with a little water, and then dip the thread into it. Wrap the thread around the balloon, making interesting patterns, and switching colors of thread if desired. You can use a lot of thread for a denser look, or less for an open, airy egg. Hang the ballon to dry with a clothespin, and when the thread is completely dry pop the balloon and remove it. These eggs look great stacked in a bowl or basket, can be hung for decoration, or used in an Easter tree.
Another fun, easy decor idea is making an Easter wreath. Start with a foam wreath mold, available at craft stores very reasonably, or a piece of cardboard cut into a circle the size that you want your wreath. You will also need Easter grass, look for fun, or unusual colors, plastic eggs, and a ribbon. Start by hot gluing the eggs to the form. If you use cardboard you will need to glue more eggs to form a nice, full base. Layer and stack the eggs to create a full texture. Then you can glue the Easter grass in between and around the eggs. Add as much or as little as what looks good to you. Once you are done you can add a ribbon to the top with hot glue.
