Here is a guide to my four favorite local bars in Birmingham, Alabama. Here you will find out where you should get a drink and what you can expect when you get there.
Rare Martini used to be the best dive bar in the Birmingham area and is still one of the better ones; depending on what night you go. As dive bars go, it is a little bit nicer than average and most people at least attempt to dress nicely. Being a UAB student, it is very close to five points and the major hospitals make it easily accessible. Like I said, it used to be a great place to go enjoy a cocktail or two on the cheap. Now, it has became over run by Samford students to the point that you can barely move after about 10 pm, especially on Thursday and Friday nights. All in all, if you don’t mind spending your night in a sea of people Rare Martini is still a great bar for students looking to have a good time on a limited budget.
Club South is a dive bar if there ever was one. Drinks are cheap (penny beer on some nights) and they should be. The venue is one of the most run down establishments you will likely come across and the crowd it attracts is of the same nature. If saving money is what is important to you, then maybe it is worth a try; but don’t expect it to look like a hip-hop music video when you get there. Despite all this I have to admit I have been there plenty of times, but usually because of an event being held there.
I have only been to Nana Funks a few times, usually after I had visited the other bars in this article, so my memory, and subsequently my review, may not be as thorough as it was for the other establishments. Drinks are more expensive, but like everything in life you get what you pay for, the crowd and the establishment are both much more inviting than it’s competitors.

In my opinion El Sol is just a larger, more happening version of Club South. The drinks are usually very cheap, unless they are having a fraternity party. This club was all but forgotten until they started allowing fraternities (specifically Tau Kappa Epsilon) to throw their themed parties there. El Sol is one of those bars where it is hit or miss. You may go one night and the place be packed out the door; whereas, the next night their may not be a soul there.
