In the Beginning
Most of you have grown up with an old round thermostat that is hard to read. Today, digital programmable thermostats are widely used. Technology has now brought us the Wi-Fi temperature control that you can access from anywhere using your smart phone
The old thermostats have moving parts, they are far from accurate, and they contain mercury. Many of these thermostats with this hazardous material find their way to the dump every day. If you do switch to digital, please dispose of the old unit safely.
Step Into Modern Times
There are many different styles and brands of digital programmable thermostats but most of them have the same basic options. Usually they have four time zones per day for weekdays and two time zones per day for weekends. They all have large displays so the need of stooping over and squinting to see the room temperature and setting point are over.
In the old days, the first one up in the morning would scurry to the thermostat on a cold morning and turn up the heat. Today you can program the thermostat to drop down to 62 degrees at night when all are asleep. It can be set to jump back up to 68 degrees in the morning 30 minutes before anyone is awake. The family can get out of bed to a toasty home and you have saved energy and money.
Control is a Cell Phone Away
Now you can monitor, control, and program your digital programmable thermostat in the palm of your hand – anywhere on earth! Wi-Fi thermostats have hit the market, which gives you access to it via computer, laptop, tablet, and even your smart phone. These thermostats take convenience and efficiency levels to another planet.
They are quite affordable and you can find them at home improvement chains starting at about $100.00. Energy Star claims that you can save at least $200.00 per year by switching to the digital programmable Wi-Fi world of thermostats. Applying simple arithmetic, this means that your new thermostat will pay for itself in its first year of use.
