Martial arts weaponry is one the aspects involved with training in a specific art, and it is also used at many competitions. Different weapons have their own flare, shape, purpose, rank, and level in which the person training uses it in. The many types of weapons there makes it nearly impossible to keep up with, let alone train in. I have some favorites that I like to use for training purposes and also when it comes to doing fight stunts in my film projects.
Swords are one of the most popular types of weapons used in the martial arts for stabbing and thrusting. What makes swords so unique and popular is the fact that there are many different kinds, used in many different ways. Swords come from different eras, and different cultures used them for a specific purpose, depending on what they were fighting for, and what martial arts style they normally train in. Here are some styles that I like the most.
Traditional Kung Fu Sword
Traditional Tai Chi Sword
Double Blade Sword
I have many of these swords and love using them in training or have them on display when not in use. Each one brings out a different flare or attitude, and with its unique designs, it also adds that special element to almost any type of sword you use.
Many people wonder what a Bo Staff is. It’s basically a long stick used in combat. But it’s not just any stick. It has a certain length, style, and design that gives you a certain edge when using it in combat, but also competitions. There are many ways to execute using a staff that requires care, attitude, and of course the style that you’re using while training with the Bo Staff. Some look like ordinary sticks and others look more pronounced with carvings, designs, more a heavy weight, and there are even some that are two-sectional, or three-sectional, which makes them resemble really long nun chucks.
The spear is also a stick weapon but with the spear, it has a pointed blade on the end used for stabbing and thrusting, making it more dangerous and challenging to use. Different cultures use spears in their own way, and each culture has their spears designed according to the style of that culture, making it distinctive from other spears. Some are lightweight and made of wood. Others are made of steel which makes it heavier and deadlier. There are even some spears where you can remove the blade completely.
I love using the nun chucks because I can bring great attitude when using them. These are basically two sticks that are connected to each other with a short rope or a chain. Unlike other more menacing weapons, the nun chucks were meant for show and became popular because of Bruce Lee. The nun chucks can’t protect you against any potential attacks, even though some techniques, if taught the right way, can help you out of some situations. But don’t count on it completely for protection. This is why they are mostly seen in movies and at competitions and not during any kind of combat. I still love using them and are one of my favorite weapons.
Nun Chucks are made of either plastic, wood, metal, fiberglass, or styrofoam. Since you can easily hurt yourself using nun chucks, styrofoam nun chucks are used for practicing, especially for children. You can move up to the most sophisticated nun chucks when you are ready.
Whip Chain/Chain Whip:
The whip chain is very unique and mostly used in Wushu . It looks like your average chain, but it isn’t. It is made with several metal rods held together by rings at the ends of each rod. One end has a handle and the other end resembles a metal dart. Many techniques can be learned while using the whip chain. Care must be taken because you can easily hurt yourself or someone else if you don’t know what you’re doing because the use of the chain consists of really fast moves, making it difficult to clearly see where it is when it is in motion. You are aided by the “whooshing” sound the chain whip makes when it is in motion and this will tell you the location of the whip chain. I love using this for the same reasons I love using the nun chucks, although the whip chain is significantly more menacing if used the right way.
Whip chains can feel heavy to those who aren’t used to them but they are flexible. With the proper training it can be used like a whip to stop an attack by another weapon, to bind someone, or even to slash at someone with the dart end. When not in use, it can be folded and hidden very easily, something you can’t do with nun chucks.
