Marvel is cranking out the superhero films like mad and is already in the works for phase three of their cycle. Following the Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel will launch into somewhat new territory with some untested characters. Ant-Man is one of those untested characters.
Ant-Man was an original member of the Avengers and was part of the team for a long period of time. He has the ability to shrink his size and has equipment that allows him to communicate with insects. One of the issues with the Ant-Man movie is that there have been several incarnations of the hero over the years. The question is simple: which Ant-Man is this going to be?
Henry “Hank” Pym
Hank Pym was the original Ant-Man in the comics and was an original member of the Avengers. Pym is the creator of specialized particles that create a size reducing effect. These would later be called Pym Particles. These same particles could be reversed to increase size and would allow Pym to become the hero Goliath.
Hank Pym would be a series of different heroes with a variety of equipment to create new abilities. He would meet Janet Van Dyne and convince her to become his partner the Wasp. Pym would later put his skills of robotics to use in the creation of Ultron. Pym would imprint the robots neural pathways with his own personality. As a result, Ultron went insane and swore to destroy Pym.
According to casting lists for the Ant-Man movie Michael Douglas has been cast as Hank Pym. This means that the movie is going to see an older Hank Pym, who will be the not be the hero Ant-Man. It will likely fall to a younger version of the hero
Casting lists reveal that the lead character will be Scott Lang. In the Marvel comic, Lang became the second incarnation of Ant-Man. Lang was a robotic expert working for Stark Industries. Lang stole the Ant-Man suit from Pym to save his daughter. Pym would allow Lang to retain the suit and become the second Ant-Man. Casting lists show that Paul Rudd will be playing Scott Lang and be the main hero of the film.
The casting list also shows Evangeline Lilly, most famous for her role as Kate on the television series Lost, in an undetermined role in the cast. Could it be that Lilly will be cast as the Wasp? This would fit with other action roles the actress has played lately. This is nothing but sheer speculation but Lilly would be a good fit in the upcoming Avengers 3.
No matter what roles develop with the Ant-Man movie, one thing is very likely; we will see more of Ant-Man than just one solo movie. Ant-Man is scheduled to arrive in theaters in mid-July of 2015.
