I don’t care what anyone says-Einstein Bros Bagels and Panera Bread serve up some damn delicious bagels, but you already know everything there is to know about these bagel shops. I want to tell you a little bit about 3 other awesome Lakeview bagel shops that are just as delish as the big guys-The Great American Bagel, Chicago Bagel Authority, and The Bagel.
The Great American Bagel
Located on Belmont Avenue, just west of Sheffield but still close enough to the action on the bustling Belmont strip, is American Bagel. If you’re the type of bagel lover that dreams about super fat bagels with all kinds of stuff on them, then this is the bagel shop for you. You’ll get your fill ten times over if you order the stuffed pepperoni tomazzo bagel, the cheddar salsa bagel, and even the fruit crumb bagel. The “crumbs” are really chunks-and they’re sweet too. They have apple, blueberry, and strawberry.
The Great American Bagel also offers the usual suspects like whole wheat, onion, cinnamon raisin, sesame, and everything bagels. While these “regular” bagels are smaller than the super bagels, they are still pretty darned big compared to other bagel shops’. Cream cheese flavors run the gamut from plain and vegetable to apple cinnamon and pineapple walnut. This place has bagel sandwiches, soups & salads, and breakfast sandwiches too, as well as more than a dozen coffee drinks and smoothies.
The Great American Bagel has parking (oh yeah!) and plenty of seating. It’s located at 1248 West Belmont, Chicago, IL. 60657, (773) 325-0606. Hours: Mon.-Fri. 6 a.m.-7 p.m., Sat. 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Website: Greatamericanbagel.com.
Chicago Bagel Authority
Chicago Bagel Authority is located right next to the Belmont L. Good location for catching commuters, but what really sets CBA apart is the way they prepare those heavenly bagels. For experimental bagel-ists, check this out – the bagels are steamed, not toasted!
You can order flavors ranging from plain and blueberry to onion and everything. CBA serves up the usual cream cheese flavors-veggie, chive, and lite plain along with its signature homemade lox spread. You can also choose from a boatload of sandwiches, salads & soups, breakfast sandwiches, and more.
Chicago Bagel Authority does not have parking (dangnabbit!), but finding metered parking isn’t all that bad. Try Sheffield in either direction or just west of Sheffield. CBA is located at 955 West Belmont, Chicago, IL. 60657, (773) 549-1982. Hours: Mon.-Sat. 7 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Website: Eatcba.com.
The Bagel has been around since 1950. This old school Jewish bagel shop, restaurant, and deli is for the bagel purist that likes to keep it traditional (and simple). The bagel options are always fresh and filling, and the cream cheese is always fluffy and flavorful. The Bagel offers everything from plain and egg bagels to cinnamon raisin and salt bagels. The black & red hued restaurant in the back serves up everything from matzo ball soup, pickled whitefish, and potato knish to fried chicken.
The Bagel has a huge parking lot (woot!) and it’s located at 3107 N. Broadway, Chicago, IL. 60657, (773) 477-0300. Hours: Mon.-Sat. 8 a.m.-10 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Website: Bagelrestaurant.com.
