If you think scarves are passé, think again. It is a classic accessory that is the perfect wisp of color, pattern and texture. Starlets, past and present, love scarves, (think Audrey Hepburn and Katie Holmes) and I’m pretty sure you can rock one too! As a stylist and professional makeup artist, I often give my clients advice on clothing ensembles and for spring, you can’t beat a cute scarf. Just to be clear, I’m not talking about those long, bulky scarves you wore last fall. Nope! The best scarves for spring are made from lighter material and can be worn in multiple ways. Try one of these ways to wear a scarf this spring!
Dress Up a T-Shirt
What’s more casual than a T-shirt? Whether you plan to wear your shirt with a pair of comfy jeans or a billowing skirt, you can pull this look together with a scarf! You’ll need a long scarf, preferably one in a color that complements the T-shirt color but bold contrasts could work too. Fold the scarf in half, lengthwise, you want it long and skinny. Place the center over your shoulder; allow the ends to dangle evenly over your shoulders. Now cinch the scarf at your waist with a double-wrap belt or an oversized belt. You’ve got a stylish yet casual look for spring.
A New Twist on the Head Scarf
Pull your hair up on top of your head, cinching it with a ponytail holder. You want the crown of your head to have a bit of lift. If you have short hair, skip the ponytail holder (obviously) and focus on getting some good lift at the back of your head. (I suggest a teasing comb). Fold a handkerchief scarf in half making a triangle. Place the long side of handkerchief at the base of your neck. Gather the two ends at the top of your head, in between your bangs and the crown. Now tie the handkerchief scarf in a neat knot. You’ll probably notice that the scarf is poking up at the back of your head. Just fold it down with your fingers. Voila!
If you were to look in this stylist’s closet, you’d notice that almost every purse I own has a scarf tied to the handle. I love them! Tie a bright colored scarf to the handle of your purse in a nice fluffy bow. You’ll always have one on standby in case you get caught in a spring rain shower.
Wear pops of color anyway you like this spring. Just reach for a lightweight, pretty scarf. Personally, I can’t resist floral patterns!
