Christmas is a distant memory by the time summer rolls around, but that does not mean that you cannot use holiday ornaments in a unique new way. Bulbs without a specific wintertime theme can be used to decorate the summer landscape. When paired with other items, they will not look at all like winter holiday decorations. Consider these creative ways to use decorative glass or metal embellishments in the flowerbeds, trees and in other areas of the landscape, and display highly unique and colorful DIY yard decor.
Display Round Ornaments on Top of Green Dowel Rods
Round Christmas ornaments can be transformed into outdoor embellishments that look nothing like winter holiday decor. Paint quarter-inch dowel rods a beautiful shade of spring green, and spray them with a coat of exterior acrylic sealer. Remove the caps from the bulbs, and place them over the wooden dowels. They will look like gorgeous contemporary flowers. Push the dowel rods into the ground in between bushes, real flowers and in other locations that could use a splash of color. No one will realize that Christmas ornaments were used to create your unique landscape decor.
Create a Faux Apple Tree
Some of the most impressive apple trees are not filled with big juicy apples. On the contrary, some of the best displays are not entirely real. Round red or green Christmas ornaments can be used to make a faux apple tree. The fruit will never spoil, and it will indefinitely remain on the tree. Glue the metal caps and hangers in place, and evenly space the faux fruit on the branches. If desired, glue two silk leaves to the top of each one. The leaves will conceal the hangers while lending a touch of realism to the abstract display.
Make a Big Nest of Blue Bulbs
Round blue Christmas ornaments can be used to create a gorgeous decoration for the summer landscape. Buy or make a grapevine wreath, and use it to make an over-sized robin’s nest. Place the wreath in between bushes, in a flowerbed, or on a porch or deck. Line the base with shredded coconut husk or natural wood mulch. Fill several light blue bulbs with sand, small pebbles or something else that will add enough weight to keep them from blowing away. Arrange the bulbs in the faux nest with the metal caps facing downward. They will no longer look like Christmas ornaments when arranged like eggs in the big faux nest. Best of all, you will have a gorgeous landscape decoration unlike anything available in stores.
