Summer is almost here once again, bringing with it long, hot days and a constant need to keep your thirst quenched.
Lemonade, iced tea, and of course water are the most common drinks enjoyed during the Summer months; however, those same drinks and others can be prepared with creative spins that you will make enjoy them even more. You can also dare to impress guests at your next cookout, get-together, or summer soiree.
One of my favorite Summer summer hobbies is re-creating and giving spins to drink recipes. Here are a few of the drinks I enjoy making for my family and friends during the summer.
Non Alcoholic Watermelon Margarita– Watermelons are one of Summer’s treasured treats. Great for cooling off and eating after a meal, watermelon can also be made into a delightful drink to be enjoyed along with your meals. Try grinding watermelon, crushed ice, and honey(optional) then serving it up in a margarita glass for a refreshing non-alcoholic watermelon margarita.
Very Berry Electric Blue Lemonade– This is one the children will love. I first made this many years ago for my high school graduation cook out and needless to say it was very much enjoyed. Take blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries and add them to your traditional lemonade recipe. Mix the berries with the sugar and lemon juice at the bottom of the container and add a packet of blue kool-aid mix. Mix well, chill in the freezer, and enjoy.
Non Alcoholic Mojitos– Mojitos are my favorite drinks, because mint, lime, and sugar are just the perfect combination. While Mojitos are almost always made with Rum, they can also be made sans the alcohol. Just follow the recipe of mashing together mint, lime, and sugar(or honey) in the bottom of a container, and instead of adding Rum just add water or club soda and it will turn out just as delicious.
Melon Ball Iced Tea– What can be better during the summer than melons and iced tea. Turns out that taste pretty darn good together. After steeping, mixing and cooling your tea, scoop out balls of fresh of cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon and add them to your drink. It is important to add the fruit after the tea has steeped and cooled or it will cook.
Pomegranate Iced Tea– Pomegranates are equally very healthy and very tasty and one of my go to snacks any time of the year. They also pair well with iced tea for an anti oxidant filled refreshing summer drink. My favorite teas for making iced tea are White Tea and Green Tea, but you can also use, Jasmine, Rose, Earl Grey or which ever suits your taste. Use a pestle or food processor to crush pomegranates and add them to the tea container, mix well with honey(or sugar) lemon, and tea. Chill and enjoy.
Non-Alcoholic Peach Pina Colada– We all know how well pineapples and coconut milk go together, but with peaches? Yes!!! I say this is a delicious spin on the classic Pina Colada recipe and worth the try. Just blend pineapple juice, coconut milk, Looza peach nectar and crushed ice in a blender. Pour into a Pina Colada glass and enjoy. Fresh peaches and/or pineapples can also be added for a thicker smoothie like consistency.
Berry Rum Smoothie– Sorry kids, this one’s strictly for adults. This adult smoothie is to die for and the guests at your next summer soiree will be sure to swoon. In a blender blend blackberries, raspberries, and boysenberries with a splash of orange juice, a splash of coconut milk, and Bacardi Rum(you can always substitute Bacardi with your own preferred Rum). Blend well and sip up.
Note: All non-alcoholic drinks can be made alcoholic by adding you favorite rum or liqueur. Alcoholic drinks can be made non-alcoholic by simply substituting the alcohol with another juice of your choice. Just remember to drink up, be refreshed, and enjoy.
