Kids enjoy making gifts for the people they love and this Smiley Flower is a great way to brighten anyone’s day. Perfect for Mother’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, a birthday or even just because, this easy-to-assemble children’s craft will be a prize parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends will be happy to display.
Here’s how to make one with your kids.
To make one Smiley Flower you’ll need:
- 1 fake sunflower (with a flat brown center large enough to be a face)
- 2 googley eyes (sized to fit your flower)
- 1 small pom pom, any color
- 1 foam cup holder
- 1 florist foam (shaped to fit inside the cup holder)
- craft glue
- decorations for the “pot”
First, gather all your materials and read through the directions. As with any kids’ activity, a little preparation will help things go more smoothly and make creating together more fun!
This is a very simple project that goes together quickly, making it suitable for most kids over the age of three as long as they have a little help from an adult. For the youngest crafters, you may wish to glue the face on the flower before inviting them to join you.
Put on a happy face
First, get your flower ready. Stand it by its stem beside the foam cup holder. To prevent your Smiley Flower from tumbling over, the sunflower should be no more than 4″ – 6″ taller than the cup. Trim the stem if necessary. If there are more than two leaves on the stem, remove them.
Next, lay your flower face up on the table. Without using any glue, place the two eyes and pom pom nose to check for size and decide on placement. Go for character rather than perfection!
When you find an expression you like, you’re ready to glue. Put a small dab of glue on the first eye and hold in place until set. Repeat for the second eye. Repeat the process a third time for the nose.
Now set aside the flower to let it dry. You’ve probably noticed that the Smiley Flower doesn’t actually have a mouth, but its cheery expression is obvious anyway.
Prepare your “pot”
Prepare for planting by sliding the florist foam into the foam cup holder. This will be the “dirt” that holds your flower in place when it’s ready to plant. For now, it will help stiffen the sides of the cup holder, making it easier to decorate.
Get creative! Decorate your “pot” the way you like. There are lots of options:
- · press on foam stickers
- · cut sticky backed foam or felt into shapes to make your own stickers
- · cut sticky-backed foam or felt into small pieces and make a mosaic design
- · give it some glitz with stick on jewels
- · weave rubberband bracelets or friendship bracelets and glue them into place
- · use ribbons, beads, buttons or fabric trims and glue into place
- · draw on the cup with permanent markers or glitter glue
This is the best place to personalize your Smiley Flower. Make it unique! Make it extra special for the person it’s intended for. Decorate a cat lover’s pot with cat stickers, a fisherman’s with fish. Or use letters to decorate with initials.
Share the smiles
When the face of your Smiley Flower and any decorations glued to the pot are totally dry, hold the flower gently by its stem and slowly push the stem into the florist foam until it is secure.
If the flower is too tall and prone to tipping over, you can carefully remove it and trim the stem to make your Smiley Flower more stable.
Now you’re ready to share the smiles! Give your flower to someone you love and watch the smiles multiply! Hopefully the recipient will have as much fun looking at their flower as you had making it.
