Coldplay continues to dominate the charts after 18 years. Assisted by Avicii, Coldplay recently released their third promotional single, “Sky Full of Stars”, from their upcoming album, Ghost Stories. The EDM track preceded by “Magic,” an alternative rock ballad on the magic of love, and “Midnight,” an ambient track promoting persistence when all hope seems to be lost, presents a strikingly new sound for the post-Britpop band. Coldplay, beginning with Mylo Xyloto, has embarked on a pop-oriented sound, but not to the extent of this track, produced by EDM producer, Avicii. The track has a progressive wall of sound. Like most Coldplay songs, the song begins with a piano solo, and slowly is joined by synthesizers, and MIDI instruments that characterize the EDM genre. There is a lot of repetition in this song, making it extremely catchy. There also is a powerful, clean vocal offered by lead singer Chris Martin in his usual baritenor-falsetto range. These elements combined with the vibrant production from Avicii assures that this will be a summer, and spring, hit even in the most remote places. Ghost Stories comes out on May 19th and is available for pre-order here.
