Look ladies, it’s Bob Eubanks!!! They almost melted with excitement and giddy laughter. These weren’t women in their 30s and 40s. These were ladies in their late 50s or early 60s who 10 minutes earlier looked to be the well dressed, dignified elites of Calhoun County, Alabama. I knew a few of these ladies and knew them to be normally serious and well spoken. Of course, they remembered the iconic game show host from The Newlywed Game. Even though it had been many years, his electric smile and Hollywood good looks morphed this group of matrons 30 years back in time. Eubanks and I co-hosted a segment for a domestic violence telethon in Anniston, Alabama. Eubanks still looked great for his age although he needed some stage makeup due to some age spots.
Jesus Christ has that same effect on people…no, they don’t start giggling like schoolgirls upon encountering Jesus. But, as the Lord lifts years of burdens and baggage off of our shoulders, there is a transformation that takes place. People often share in their testimonies about how they feel younger once they realized forgiveness is available through Jesus Christ. They talk about how the grass looks greener and the sky looks bluer. Jesus wants to carry your burdens. Jesus often spoke in terms of farming metaphors. He once said that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. To the Jewish audience in an agrarian society, they fully understood his illustration. A team of oxen would plow fields with heavy yokes upon their neck and shoulders. Jesus’ words drew an amazing contrast to the listener.
The change that Jesus brings to our life isn’t a fleeting one as it was with the Bob Eubanks temporary groupies. Christ introduces you to a transformation similar to when a butterfly emerges from a cocoon. The butterfly never returns to the cocoon. In fact, that cocoon dries up and becomes very brittle. It is just a shell of what used to exist within its confines. The Bible puts it this way in II Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Have you grown weary in this life? Do the burdens seem too heavy? Are you ready for an easy yoke and a lighter burden? Jesus Christ is ready to make that transformation in your life. Allow Him to do His work in your life.
