In fact, there are currently only two compressed-air energy storage facilities in the world. The problem has been that such facilities have erratic air temperatures. It is necessary to stabilize the temperature with natural gas, which is not cost effective, and poses a great obstacle to the mainstream usage of this type of energy storage. SustainX has developed a foam which is keeping the temperature stable, and is relatively inexpensive to produce.
SustainX is a relatively new company. They were founded in 2007, but they may prove to cause a great impact on how energy is produced and used. The firm has already received funding from important organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy, which means that their efforts are being taken seriously. The efficient and affordable storage of renewable energy is providing a new weapon in the fight against climate change.
