The latest of the X-Men films is due out near the end of May. The film is unique because it draws on characters from the previous X-Men films and the new reboot of X-Men: First Class. The X-Men series of movies have had multiple instalments over the past ten years. Through these various films, we have been introduced to a huge variety of characters. There are a number of classic X-Men characters who will be absent from the Days of Future Past. While we do not know the reasons these characters do not appear in the Days for Future Past, there is some speculation.
Cyclops (Scott Summers)
Cyclops was an original member of the X-Men in the pages of the comics and did appear in the first series of X-Men films. Cyclops was named after the mythical Greek creature with only one eye. Cyclops has the power of discharging an optic blast. The beams originate from his eyes and are focused through a visor covering his eyes. Cyclops was presumed dead following the events of the third X-Men movie: The Last Stand.
Jean Grey (Phoenix)
Jean Grey is an incredibly powerful telepath who has the ability of telekinesis. Telekinesis is the ability to lift objects with nothing more than the power of the mind. Jean also seemed to be developing the ability to be telepathic which is to read the thoughts of others. These latent abilities became apparent during the series of X-Men films. The Last Stand revealed that Jean had not been killed in her rescue of the other team members at the close of X-Men 2. Instead of being killed, her telekinetic powers unleashed the power of the Phoenix inside of her. The Phoenix was out of control and killed Professor Xavier and presumably Cyclops. The change of Jean Grey to the Phoenix character caused a need for the X-Men to stop her. In the end, Wolverine was forced to face Phoenix down and kill her. One main reason that Jean Grey may not appear in the movie is because of her death in The Last Stand.
Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner)
Nightcrawler appeared in X-Men 2 and has the ability to teleport at will. There is seemingly no reason that the character does not appear in the story. It may be that Nightcrawler may not have appeared in the original story in the comics. While Nightcrawler has not seemingly played a significant role in the movies, he was a major part of the comic book versions.
Angel (Warren Worthington III)
Angel appeared briefly in The Last Stand but we see little of him elsewhere. Angel has a giant pair of feathered wings and has the ability to fly. Angel was one of the original members of the X-Men and appeared in X-Men #1. However, the character has not seemed to make the transition to the silver screen.
Banshee (Sean Cassidy)
Banshee is named after the mythical creature whose screams would drive people insane. Banshee has the power of the sonic scream which emits a high frequency blast. The scream also allows Banshee to fly. Banshee appeared in X-Men First Class but seems to be absent from the casting lists.
X-Men Days of Future Past brings the best of the past and the best of the present X-Men heroes together. X-Men fans have been eagerly waiting for this newest film for years. X-Men Days of Future Past comes to theaters on May 23, 2014.
