Rogue Legacy is a modern game with a retro feel. In this unusual game, you play as a hero attempting to slay the multitude of evil creatures inhabiting a castle. Should you die in your quest, you begin again as one of your descendants. Each hero you play has a different class, and thus different special abilities. Each class provides distinct advantages and disadvantages that can be particularly good for certain goals or parts of the game. The following class guide for Rogue Legacy will help you pick the best class for any given generation of hero.
Knight / Paladin (A) – The Paladin is a well rounded class with no disadvantages, except that it can’t learn the best spells. The Paladin has a defensive ability that will completely prevent damage, but it is not the easiest ability to time. Due to good overall stats, this is a great default choice when you are doing basic exploring. It is also a good class for early boss battles and for learning the patterns of a boss, though a more specialized class is best for later boss battles.
Mage / Archmage (B) – The greatest advantage of the Archmage is your potential to know any and every spell in the game. Due to the Archmage’s low strength and health, this is a bad class for exploring. You should generally use it for boss battles or chest hunting. The ability of the Archmage to cycle through three different spells gives you a much better chance to complete various Fairy Chest challenges.
Barbarian / Barbarian King (B) – The Barbarian King is one of the best classes in the game for hunting normal chests. With very high health and a special ability that can deflect projectiles and enemies, you can easily explore a lot of area safely. You are weaker than normal and have very few spell points, so you shouldn’t use this class for boss battles or even to fight mini-bosses.
Miner / Spelunker (D+) – While the Spelunker may seem like a class that will help you get money during early levels of Rogue Legacy, the class is actually pretty bad at that. The problem is that the Spelunker has such weak stats that you will die on any protracted run through the castle. This class actually shines later in the game when you are trying to gather runes from Fairy Chests. Your low stats aren’t as bad in the early sections and you can still acquire runes there.
Shinobi / Hokage (A) – The Hokage is a purely offensive character. The class has high speed and high attack power at the cost of health and magic points. It isn’t great for acquiring gold because it has terrible exploration skills, but it is a great class for killing bosses. In a single fight the increased damage is a greater benefit than the decreased health.
Knave / Assassin (B-) – This class gains power as you gain critical hit chance, but always flounders due to low stats. The Assassin is a little better than the Shinobi at exploring, but only because it has an easier to use defensive ability. If you have at least a moderately good critical hit chance and you have used the architect to lock down the castle, this is a great class for farming mini-bosses.
Spellthief / Spellsword (D) – Unless you have a massive magic point pool, this is a weak class. The benefit of the class is that it drains magic points when it attacks, but it has a very small magic point pool and generally weak stats as well. The special ability of the Spellsword can deal devastating magic damage, but only for a single shot because you will run out of magic points. You should really only use this class when you have no better choice.
Lich / Lich King (B-) – The Lich King is a solid class if you are willing to fight through the early portion of the castle, rather than teleport directly to whatever section you have reached. It starts with pitiful health and magic points, but increases those maximum values with each kill. The Lich King can only have one of two spells and both are area damage spells. The best use for this class is farming gold in areas that have swarms of enemies.
Dragon (C+) – The Dragon completely changes the way you play the game and tends to make your rune and equipment selections useless. The reason is that the Dragon always flies and has a ranged attack which costs magic points. The latter would be a problem except that the Dragon also constantly regenerates magic points. Your character will be very flimsy, which makes you terrible against bosses, but you are excellent at defeating Fairy Chest challenges.
Traitor (B+) – In terms of stats, the traitor only has disadvantages, having lower health and magic points. But this is made up for by the incredibly powerful spells and special ability that the traitor has. You can clear enemies and kill bosses by spamming these powers. You won’t get a lot of gold this way, but this is a solid choice for boss battles.
