When it comes to finding a way to curl your hair, there are a ton of products on the market. Growing up, I remember using my grandma’s hot rollers to achieve a bouncy, fun look. But now, there are products that make your life much easier and curl your hair with less damage and work. As a beauty expert, here are my tips on finding the right curling tool for you.
Hot rollers are the traditional item for curling hair. They use plastic tubes with ventilation holes you heat to curl your hair. Simply heat the rollers, roll a small section of hair around the roller and clip with a bobby pin or hair clasp. Most hot roller kits come with large, medium and small rollers so if you have layered hair you can be sure to have all the right sized curls. The larger the roller, the looser the curl so you can achieve both tight ringlets and beachy waves with hot rollers. You can even sleep in them to maximize your curl shape. They do take some practice using, and if you mess up, you really have to work to get your hair to look the way you want. You also may require a lot of processing time or need rollers that get extremely hot if you have long or thick hair. They are also not very portable, but you can get travel sized kits. Curling irons are the other mainstay in curling technology. A curling iron gets incredibly hot quickly, so if you get good at using it, you can curl your hair fast. Simply plug it in and allow it to heat completely, then wrap your hair around the barrel. Some curling irons have a clip to help keep your hair in place. It makes it easier to hold and it makes burning yourself difficult, but can leave a crease in the hair. Clipless curling irons require you to have your fingers very close to the barrel, but don’t have a crease. I like using both curling irons depending on the look I want. You can also use curling irons to make waves when the barrel is larger. Curling irons can have various heat settings which is good for hair thicknesses, but the potential for burns is high. Automatic curlers are a new heat tool that has hit the market recently. I have tried a few and find that if you like looser, non ringlet curls, these tools are a huge time saver. Simply comb a small section of hair and the device will pull it in gently. After about twelve seconds, it beeps and you release the hair, leaving you with a soft, light curl. They use less heat, so make sure you use a firm hold styling product to keep the curl lasting all day. If you’re looking for ringlet curls or have very long hair, this device may not give you the results you want. They are also pretty pricey, so they are an investment piece. Now that you’ve chosen a heat tool, using the right products is important in getting a good curl, too. A curl shampoo and conditioner are great for getting the right texture on your final product. I like Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves curl defining shampoo and conditioner. It smells like grape and leaves my hair feeling soft and helping it to curl more easily. A curl defining cream, like OGX Argan Oil Curl Defining Cream can also help keep your new curls in place. After you have your curls in place, use a hair spray to lock them in. My favorite is Big Sexy Spray & Play Volumizing Hair Spray that helps keep my curls bouncy but lasting all day. Once your curls are set, you’re ready to take on the world.
