Summer clothing is starting to appear in more stores, and it’s time to start thinking about warmer weather. But how do you choose a style that works for your body and height? As a fashion and beauty expert, follow my easy guide on how to achieve your best summer looks that are uniquely you.
Shorts can be the hardest item to find the right fit for your body. I personally have a hard time finding them, but a couple tricks help me in the process. First, look at your body in a mirror and draw a shape around your hips. If you draw a circle, you have curvy hips, a rectangle means straight hips and an oval means you have a slight curve to your body.
Now that you know your hip type, you can think about what style of short to wear If you’re curvy, look for shorts that are longer in the back for maximum booty coverage. Straight hips look great in styles that are shorter, and slightly curvy hips can wear both types easily.
The next thing to consider is your height. If you’re petite, you want to stray away from knee length styles unless you want a pair of slightly short capri pants. Opt for styles that look like they might be too short on the hanger. You will be shocked how long they are on your body. Taller girls should look for shorts that are slightly longer, so you don’t end up with shorts that resemble underwear.
Dresses and Skirts
Dresses are a great item to throw on and head out the door with during the summer. If you carry your weight in your tummy, check out styles that are loose all the way down or have a fit at the waist and flare out just under the waist. This can help mask any tummy troubles. If you carry your weight in your hips like I do, choose styles that are fitted all the way through to show off curves, or ones that are tightest under the bust to minimize them.
If you’re tall, maxi dresses can be your best friend because they will almost always be long enough. Avoid super short sun dresses unless you wear leggings or shorts underneath. Also avoid high low styles which can be very, very short in the front. If you’re petite, tea length dresses that hit at the knee provide lots of coverage and comfort. If you want a maxi dress, you may want to have it professionally hemmed so it doesn’t drag the floor.
For skirts the same rules apply. Short girls should opt for shorter styles, and taller girls can rock the maxi look even in a skirt. Curvy girls should find skirts that have flow so they don’t make your backside look bigger, and girls with straighter hips should find flared or “poofy,” skirts that add volume. Wearing patterns can also give volume to thighs and your backside.
Capris are my personal favorite item to wear in the summer time. Curvy, straight hipped and slightly curvy girls can all wear capri pants, but choose a rise that covers you in your areas of concern. I always find ones that are a little higher in the rise to help keep my bottom from hanging out. If you’re petite, you definitely need to get your capris in the petites section of your store. Sometimes, I buy regular capris and have them hemmed to the right length. Taller girls should opt for longer styles, as shorter capris can look like bermuda shorts on long legs.
Follow these steps and you’ll find yourself looking fantastic all summer long. And as always, you can break the rules a little bit even if your body type doesn’t match the style perfectly. Fashion is all about experimentation, so let your creativity and personality show in each summer outfit you wear.
