Now that warmer weather is on its way, many people will be more active and this, of course, includes people with pets. The Kanawha Valley has several dog parks for residents to bring their four-legged friends out for a day of fun.
Charleston, East End, at the corner of East Washington Street and Maxwell Street
Large fenced area for the dogs and covered benches for humans. An adjacent parking lot makes access easy, especially for the park’s location on the East End with limited street parking. During warm weather there is a watering station available.
The park is large, taking up about half of the block. Completely open, no trees or other obstacles in the park itself. On occasion, there are tennis balls in area. This park does not have a separate area for small dogs, so if you have a small dog and are concerned about mingling with larger dogs you might want to consider another park.
North Charleston Community Center
The park is located next to the baseball fields. There is a large parking lot available. Several benches are in the park and one large, covered bench area as well. During warm weather there is a water area available.
This is a very large park. However, there is not separate play area for smaller dogs. As with the East End dog park, if you have concern about small and large dogs being in the same park, this one may not be best choice.
South Charleston, Joplin Park
2034 Rosemont Avenue South Charleston, just off Kanawha Turnpike. Fenced in area. This a a smaller dog park shaded by several large trees. Those trees are inside of the fenced area making it more like a wooded area than a park. The park does not have a separate area for small dogs.
St. Albans City Park
Just off Observatory Drive. The dog park is inside the city park and is only open from April through December. There are two areas, one for small dogs and the larger park. The large area has a steep hillside on the left as you enter. There are some obstacle course items setup on the flat area, an old fire hydrant for the all important pee break, and some times toys.
There are benches available for the human companions, however they are not covered. A doggy water fountain is provided as well as one for humans.
