Abdominal swelling in dogs can be very serious, or it could be caused by something minor, like eating too much too quickly. A couple months ago, my small dog, Mila, suddenly developed a large, round stomach and seemed uncomfortable. She vomited, and wasn’t acting like her usual happy-go-lucky self. My husband and I were worried, so we called the emergency veterinarian. Because it was late at night on a weekend, the vet asked about her symptoms and told us to see how she seemed in the morning, but to call again right away if she kept vomiting.
If your dog has abdominal swelling and any other symptoms, such as lethargy, discomfort, and vomiting, it is important to call your veterinarian immediately. What could be causing the stomach swelling?
Air in the stomach
Bloat or gastric dilation volvulus (GDV) can be very serious and fatal. Bloat is when gas or food stretches the stomach, and GDV happens when it rotates, trapping the air or food inside the stomach’s blood supply. This can happen if your dog eats too quickly or gets too excited after eating a meal.
Infection caused by ruptured stomach
Is your dog listless, vomiting, and reluctant to move? She could have peritonitis, which is an infection that is usually caused by a puncture or ruptured stomach caused by a splintered bone or something else.
Overproduction of cortisol
You may have heard of Cushing’s disease. This condition is usually caused by the overproduction of a cortisol, although it is sometimes caused by a tumor. If your dog is eating, drinking, and/or urinating more, he could have Cushing’s disease.
Fluid in the abdomen
A condition called ascites can cause the buildup of fluid in the stomach, which will often lead to abdominal swelling in dogs. The treatment for this condition depends on what is causing it. Ascites could be caused by heart failure, liver disease, or a number of problems.
Severe roundworm infections can cause abdominal swelling in puppies. If you suspect your puppy has worms, you will often see the parasites in your pet’s stool. Even if you don’t see them, visit a vet to take care of the problem as soon as possible.
These are just a few of the possible causes of abdominal swelling in dogs. Luckily, Mila was back to her normal self the next morning, and she has been fine since. We decided that her round stomach and discomfort were likely caused when she got upset by the cat eating her food and quickly gobbled it down. She then proceeded to chase the cat afterward. Still, it is always wise to check with the vet if you notice that your pet is behaving differently than normal.
