My family has recently taken a trip to hike in the caribou wilderness which can be found in the Lassen National Forest. The purpose of the trip was to have a fun family activity, to collect herbs, and have a summer adventure. We hiked for about four hours starting at the Hay Meadows trailhead, which included stopping to eat lunch and enjoy long lake on the Posey lake loop. The trail was not overly strenuous our four-year old child was able to make the trip with only needing a few breaks.
The caribou wilderness is full of lakes and beautiful sights. We were able to teach our children about several of the floral life in the forest. This was also a good time to teach hiking safety in a family context. This was a great bonding experience for my family.
According to gorp.com the Caribou wilderness covers an area of 20,500 acres with an average elevation of 6,900 feet. Our hike did involve some up-hill walking but the inclines were never very steep and we were pleased to see the tops of other mountains that were all around us.
Gorp.com reports that the wildlife in the caribou wilderness includes squirrels, chipmunks, deer, black bears, pine marten, bald eagles, ospreys, ducks, and mosquitos. Unfortunately, we did not see that much wildlife, we did however, see chipmunks, and a healthy population of very aggressive mosquitoes.
The caribou wilderness while being valuable in its own right is also historically significant to modern day Lassen County. Gorp.com reported that the caribou wilderness was the place that many of the early settlers used to hunt the animals living there.
The caribou wilderness is just that wilderness, it is off the main road, we had to take dirt and gravel roads to get there. This is not the type of trail that you will run into a lot of people. So just a few tips if you plan on going, pack plenty of food, water, and mosquito repellant. Hiking is an awesome family experience, and a summer experience I would highly suggest to anyone seeking to get away from it all and reconnect with nature for a little while.
