Caramel is an edible brown substance. It can be a solid or a liquid. It’s actually my favorite dessert topping. You see it on ice creams, as candies, and even on apples, but have you ever consider what it takes to get from granules of sugar to the smooth, sweet substance that can be used for a large variety of purposes? The process of making caramel even has a cooking technique named after it. You make caramel through the process of caramelization.
Caramelization is when the water is removed from the sugar. It’s much more complicated than that because of how the chemical compounds fragment and contribute to the taste and because of how the polymerization, or combining, of chemicals contribute to the dark brown color; but I don’t want to bore you with the scientific details when you want to read about caramel. Instead, I will continue this by talking about the different uses of caramel.
Caramel sauce is a very commonly used form of caramel because of how, once caramelized, the caramel is ready to be served when it is cool enough to not burn the tongue it touches. Caramel sauce is most-known for being a great ice cream topping. I think caramel sauce on vanilla ice cream is absolutely delicious, especially in hot weather when you have a craving for something sweet.
Caramel is also used to make candies. Flavoring such as vanilla, cream, and butter can also be added to make vanilla caramel or caramel cream candies. The sugar, and sometimes water or oil, can be boiled separately from the other ingredients; and then the other ingredients can be added to flavor the caramel to match the flavor of the desired candy. Alternately, the ingredients can all be added at once, but it must not reach the normal cooking temperature of caramel. This is to make it so that the milk caramelizes and the sugar does not. Following either procedure, you can enjoy the delicious caramel. You can find the recipe for caramel on wikihow. In fact, I’ll leave a link to the recipe to make caramel that I used here: http://m.wikihow.com/Make-Caramel.
Caramel has been enjoyed for ages, from a sweet sauce to a hard candy. Although caramels are not as popular as Twix or Reese’s, they are a timeless candy that should be available at a local Walgreens. The consumers can bring back the popularity of the caramel by buying more and sharing them with people so that more can enjoy.
