Make the internet your best friend
When buying a new or used car I like to put the buying power in my hands. That way I get more bang for my buck. I make the internet my best friend. On the internet I can go to a number of websites and price cars. I can look at all the dealers’ websites and see just what is available to me. I can see what each dealer has to offer. Make Dealers Compete for Your Business
In the negotiation process I tell each dealer what prices the competition is offering. I also use the Kelly Blue Book (https://www.KBB.com) as a negotiating tool. It is a war out there, and as the consumer I have to be on my toes to get what I want for the price I want. If I do not like the way the negotiation is going I simple get up to leave.
Bring your own financing
Like car buying I have to shop around for my financing as well. Again the best place to do that is on the internet. I get preapproved for the amount I want to spend and interest rate I want.
Everything is negotiable
There is a sticker on the side window that will read “fixed cost and non-negotiable”. The dealer is hoping that will make his/her job easier. Everything is negotiable.
Shop the Trade-in
What is my trade-in worth? The dealer is in the business of making money; therefore he/she is going to offer me as little as possible for my car. Again the Kelly Blue Book helps me in this negotiation also.
Timing is everything
August through October are the best months to car shop. If I can wait to buy my new/used car until then, I am in a better position to negotiate price.
Think About Your Vehicle Choice
The car I am looking to buy, is it really the right one for my needs? I have two dogs and a cat that need to go to the vets plus I live on a farm. Maybe I need to be looking at a pickup truck not this cute little candy apple red sports car I fell in love with.
I have found the right vehicle and the right dealer who will negotiate price with me; however, the vehicle he has is purple and the dealer across town has the exact same vehicle but in blue. Here is a little known fact. Dealers will work with another dealer to make a sale.
