This previous weekend, moviegoers donned were draped in stars and stripes a little too early for Independence Day.
Fans lined up to see Walt Disney and Marvel Studios’ new film, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which opened in theaters in both 2D and 3D formats. According to www.imdb.com, ‘The Winter Soldier’ grossed over $95 million during its opening weekend.
The movie follows Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans), also known as the shield-wielding superhero Captain America, and his personal struggle with finding his niche in the modern world. After the events that took place in “The Avengers,” Rogers (or “Cap”) now works for the secret government agency S.H.I.E.L.D., headed by super-spy Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). After an attack on Fury, Cap is exposed to a shocking truth that S.H.I.E.L.D. has betrayed Fury and the neo-Nazi organization, HYDRA, may be at the center of the operation, infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.. Armed with his shield and soldier savvy, Rogers is now a target of S.H.I.E.L.D., now headed by Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), acting in place of the out-of-commission Fury.
Cap has very few he can trust, including fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and former military pilot Sam “The Falcon” Wilson (Anthony Mackie). In the midst of g getting to the bottom of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s heinous agendas, Rogers is also the target of a mysterious yet brutal assassin dubbed “The Winter Soldier”, who may be a familiar face from Roger’s past, before spending seven decades in frozen suspension.
Like most sequels, it would best to watch the first movie before jumping into the second or third films. “Captain America: The First Avenger” contains a few leads and clues to follow for the plot of “The Winter Soldier.”
The cast was outstanding. The characters were really brought to life on screen. Evans was in rare form as the fearless and selfless hero, but also shows a bit of internal conflict in this film. He questions what is right and wrong, and who he can and can’t trust.
My only concerns were the length of the movie. It felt like I was in there for three hours, but really it’s about over two hours long. Typical time for an action film these days.
I saw it in regular 2D format, but all of the action scenes would probably be ten times better in 3D. “The Winter Soldier” is definitely worth the price of tickets and concessions, and already viewed as one of the best movies in 2014 thus far.
