The X-Men movie franchise got some serious rebirth during Memorial Day weekend with a massive opening weekend of 91 million. There have been some questions if the franchise can gain enough momentum to match the Marvel franchise of the Avengers. The Avengers was one of the biggest movies of all time and the characters were well known through the creation of lead in movies on the solo characters. Could the X-Men franchise be doing something similar?
The X-Men and the Avengers are both teams of superheroes from the Marvel Universe. However, Marvel does not own the movie and film rights to the X-Men franchise. Several different characters were sold by Marvel before they started their own studio. Marvel Studios does not own the film rights to the X-Men and Spider-Man. These films are actually rivals to the studio. This is the reason that three different superhero films were released just weeks apart over April and May of 2014. Marvel will also be in the summer blockbuster hunt with Guardians of the Galaxy arriving on August 1.
The X-Men franchise has several things working in its favor and these could lead to a larger box office draw. However, the Marvel franchise is far ahead in character development, movie count and sheer volume of sales.
One thing that the X-Men have moving in its favor is the number of stars who are involved in the series. With names like Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry and Patrick Stewart the film is going to draw attention. The sheer star power of the X-Men franchise seems to be massive but is it going to be enough. Jackman has said that he would be leaving the cast for future films but has recently stated that the newest movie has changed his mind. Keeping Jennifer Lawrence in her role as Mystique could also be a challenge.
Potential Character Development
One of the aspects of the Days of Future Past is that it is a time traveling movie. This means that everything that may have occurred in the previous X-Men movies can be changed. The stories that have been less than stellar for the franchise, namely The Last Stand, can be completely altered or erased thanks to the time traveling of Days of Future Past.
Potential Spin offs
X-Men director Bryan Singer has already signed on for the 2016 film X-Men Apocalypse. New films can lead to additional X-Men spin offs and generate a series of new films. There are rumors that lesser known characters such as Gambit could be getting their own film treatment. The X-Men franchise is also rich with spin off teams that handle their own sets of villains. The potential is huge for the franchise and the future looks incredible.
Can the X-Men really rival the Avengers? The likelihood is that the X-Men franchise will never truly catch the already on fire Avengers but they could get a larger piece of the superhero action. With new characters, new teams and new opportunities the X-Men franchise could easily be expanded to make X-Men fans extremely happy for many years to come.
