I tucked away my ankle-length winter coat — for the third time this year.
The first time I did so was towards the third week of February, when the temperature was already in the fifty-degree mark. It was comfortable going out in just a hoodie, or a varsity jacket. But then, by the end of the month, the temperature plunged to as low as 9º F (-12º C), and stayed low for… oh, long enough that I had to take out my winter jacket again.
I know that I was jumping the gun, since the official start of spring is the 20th of March. But hope springs eternal, especially if one wants a bitter winter to be over soon. In this case, my hopes were up too early. The result is a disappointed me huddled over in heavy winter trappings once again.
And then, by the second week of March, the temperature rose again to friendly levels. Warm, in fact. Particularly on the 11th of March, when it was an almost-baking 66º F in the middle of the day. Oh, how I reveled in that. To celebrate, I closeted not only my winter coat, but my boots as well. This time, I was sure that warmer climes are on the way.
For almost two weeks, a short autumn coat was sufficient to keep out the cold. There were a couple of hiccups in the form of low evening temperatures, like 18º F, but they were manageable.
And then… again! More cold! We were getting lows of twenty-degree temperatures last week. It was already past the official start of spring, but the weather did not get the memo. With a sigh of resignation, I once again opened my closet to take out my winter coat — and boots. Oh, will this cold never end?
On April 1st — uh-oh! April Fool’s Day! — the temperature once again soared to a comfortable 60º F. Please don’t let this be some coincidence of April Fool’s Day, I implored the weather gods. Please let this be the start of spring, finally.
I checked the forecast, and in the next few days, the temperature would not go down to the 40’s. So, with the spirit of an optimist, I did put away my winter coat for the third time this year. But the question is: will I have to take it out again?
It is a miserable day today. It is raining, and tonight’s “feels like” low is 32º F. A storm is expected later, and more is to come on Monday. There is still snow in places like Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. A feeling of exasperation is welling up inside me as the winds gust at 18 mph. But this is rain, not snow, I tell myself. And the storm that is to come in a couple of days is the Global Warming version of Spring Showers. (Sure, keep telling yourself that).
Given the situation, it seems safe to say that I will not have to take out my winter coat again. I think it is time for raincoats to come out. And I hope I don’t have to see my winter coat again until next year.
